According to the Fandango interview, Jon Favreau felt a profound sense of awe and nostalgic gratitude when directing Martin Scorsese. Having grown up watching Scorsese's films, Favreau viewed the opportunity as a privilege. This unexpected casting of the voice actor as an Ardennian character provided the director with an unforgettable opportunity of a lifetime.
“It was a once-in-a-lifetime thing for me”, he noted in the interview. Their existing professional history further deepened this reverence, as Favreau had previously acted in The Wolf of Wall Street and shared festival stages with him, making the collaboration feel like a monumental milestone in his own career.
Favreau experienced genuine excitement and creative joy in weaving their Star Wars characters together. Having previously played an Ardennian cook in Solo: A Star Wars Story, he relished the opportunity to design a related Ardennian character in The Mandalorian & Grogu. He observed that while directors are traditionally accustomed to running the show on their own sets, they often want to have fun when stepping onto someone else's project.
"He was just a lot of fun. It's interesting because, you know, when a director is on their set, they're running the show, but I find when directors are on other people's sets, they just want to play and have fun, and he just had a great time”, he said. Favreau thoroughly enjoyed this dynamic, finding Scorsese to be incredibly fun to work with as they bounced ideas back and forth and leaned into Scorsese's natural talent for improvisation.
The unique four-armed alien species create an amusing bridge between two separate cinematic chapters.
The character of species called Ardennians in the Star Wars universe
Jon Favreau previously portrayed the first notable Ardennian named Rio Durant, who worked as a starship pilot and cook in Solo: A Star Wars Story. The upcoming blockbuster introduces a new relative who operates a bustling food truck in the galactic underworld. The major difference lies in their specific narrative roles and the creative execution of their personalities. The original character from the 2018 film participated in dangerous heist missions.
Conversely, the new vendor in The Mandalorian & Grogu 2026 serves as an entertaining detour for the traveling protagonists.

Both characters share the same family surname, establishing a fun canonical connection between the projects. Solo arrived in theaters back in May 2018 to introduce the unique multi-limbed species to audiences. The highly anticipated follow-up feature film landed in global cinemas on May 22, 2026. Jon Favreau has masterfully bridged generations of cinema by bringing Martin Scorsese into the Star Wars universe through a uniquely charming alien performance.
