Do not poke the bear! That may have been the case for Tom Cruise, whose curiosity cost him a chance to star in one of Hollywood's biggest hits, and that role ultimately went to Johnny Depp. Initially offered to Cruise, this became one of the most commercially successful films of Depp's career. However, after the Rain Man actor raised several detailed questions about the project, the opportunity eventually slipped away.

And the questions were surprisingly simple and yet far more bizarre than anyone might have expected.

In Edward Scissorhands, Johnny Depp played the role of a gentle humanoid whose inventor died before replacing the scissors attached to his hands with real ones. However, when Tom Cruise was offered the role, he questioned the character's everyday life, such as how Edward went to the bathroom and how he managed to survive for so many years without eating. And these are the questions that director Tim Burton did not want to answer.

“How does he go to the bathroom? How did he live without eating all these years?” Cruise reportedly asked, as revealed by Caroline Thomas, who wrote the screenplay, to Far Out Magazine.

Screenwriter Caroline Thompson later told Far Out Magazine that it was important for those mysteries to remain unanswered, as they were part of the film's charm. However, Cruise was not willing to sign on without getting answers to those questions.

Ultimately, the role went to Johnny Depp. And he brought remarkable nuance and innocence to Edward Scissorhands. The film became a major success and catapulted Depp as one of Hollywood's most versatile actors.
