John Oliver did not hesitate to take a dig at DC movies' failure during a discussion on Last Week Tonight. The host has never been one to shy away from speaking his mind. He has continued that same approach in the thirteenth season of his HBO series, Last Week Tonight. From social issues to the political situation in the country, Oliver has continued to say what he believes needs to be said.

Most recently, the host did it again, and this time, he took a dig at his own show’s parent company's DC movies.

John Oliver appeared on the newest Sunday edition of his show, Last Week Tonight, and discussed the US President Department of Justice. He criticized the DOJ under former Attorney General Pam Bondi and designated Attorney General Todd Blanche, pointing out that several cases, including the one against James Comey and Letitia James, have been dismissed, as also noted by NBC News’ Laura Jarrett in a clip. Oliver further pointed out Blanche’s comment that they “are working hard” and went on to take a dig at DC movies’ failures.

“And second, I didn’t realize the existence of repeated unsuccessful attempts was actually good news — that’s huge for DC movies, if true,” he said.

The host further went on to show a collage of DC superhero movie posters featuring Birds of Prey, The Flash, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, Black Adam, and Supergirl, several of which failed to meet box office expectations. Many of these films were not a complete failure but were a box office disappointment.

The latest movie, Supergirl, earned $126 million worldwide against a budget of more than $170 million, which is a massive loss for the studio. Now, interestingly, Oliver's show is owned by HBO and its parent company, Warner Bros., which also owns DC. However, that is not unexpected of the host, who has always made bold comments.

Most recently, he did a parody campaign on Buc-ee's.

During the  July 26, 2026 episode of Last Week Tonight, John Oliver criticized the famous travel center chain, Buc-ee’s, for its recent actions, calling it aggressive trademark enforcement. He spoke about cases where the company took legal action against businesses with similar cartoon animal logos. He further mocked this by creating a fake merchandise line called “Buc-Off” using designs similar to those Buc-ee’s had challenged.

"If any prominent gas station chain out there has an issue with our new logo and products and wants to get lawyers involved, then you know what? Bring it the f*** on," Oliver said.

And this limited collection was also made available to people, with all proceeds going to Hunger Free America. It will be available till September 8, 2026. Along with bold opinions, the host seemingly also makes sure to contribute to the world whenever he can. This unique gesture, his hilarious antics, sharp humor, and long-form investigative comedy clearly have made him a favorite among viewers.
