John Oliver is officially joining General Hospital for a three-episode guest arc airing on July 2, 3, and 6 on ABC. The appearance comes months after the Last Week Tonight host jokingly asked for a "juicy" role during a March episode of his HBO show. Oliver later confirmed the casting on the June 28 edition of Last Week Tonight. Executive producer Frank Valentini revealed that the soap moved quickly after hearing Oliver's request.

“When John Oliver publicly threw down the gauntlet and said he wanted to appear on a soap, we did not hesitate for a second,” Valentini said in a press release.

He also praised Oliver as "prepared, professional, funny and genuinely kind," teasing that his character will play an important role in the storyline. Oliver, meanwhile, called the experience "a true honor" and joked that he was happy to become "a small stain" on the show's long history.

While Oliver is stepping into the world of Port Charles, his HBO series recently celebrated another unique creative tradition from across the globe.

John Oliver highlighted Ghana's imaginative movie poster tradition

On a recent episode of Last Week Tonight, John Oliver explored Ghana's hand-painted movie poster culture, an art form that emerged during the country's mobile cinema boom in the 1980s. Because artists often relied on secondhand plot descriptions rather than the films themselves, posters for movies like Jurassic Park, Ghost, and Star Wars became wildly imaginative interpretations filled with unexpected characters and exaggerated action.

To honor the tradition, Last Week Tonight commissioned Ghanaian artist C. A. Wisely to create a hand-painted Emmy campaign poster. Oliver's team supplied a collection of unusual images, allowing the artist complete creative freedom. The finished artwork embraced the same bold, surreal style, while proceeds from poster sales were directed toward community charities in Ghana, turning the tribute into both a celebration of the art form and a charitable initiative.
