John Lithgow has praised HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter TV series for its eight-episode format, saying the extended runtime allows for far more storytelling than the two-hour movies ever could. The upcoming Harry Potter television adaptation is shaping up to be a very different experience from the beloved film franchise. With an episodic format and a longer runtime, the series promises to spend more time developing characters, relationships, and details from J.K. Rowling’s books that were previously condensed for the big screen.
As anticipation continues to build, cast members have started offering glimpses into what viewers can expect from the new adaptation. Their comments suggest the series will take full advantage of its expanded storytelling canvas.

Speaking on the Tony Awards red carpet, John Lithgow, who will portray Albus Dumbledore in the upcoming HBO series, praised the television format for allowing the story to unfold at a more natural pace.
"You know we are doing 8 episodes to complete one entire book. The movie's only had 2 hours, we have 8 hours so there's much much more storytelling to do," reflecting on the difference between the films and the new series, Lithgow told CBS Mornings.
His comments highlight one of the biggest advantages of the adaptation. Rather than compressing an entire novel into a single feature-length film, the series will have several hours to explore the Wizarding World, giving greater attention to character arcs, world-building, and moments that did not make it into the movies.
That expanded runtime may already be influencing how some familiar characters are being reimagined.
The series will dive deeper into Draco Malfoy's world
Speaking to 1883 Magazine, Lox Pratt shared that the upcoming series will offer a deeper exploration of Draco Malfoy's life, giving audiences a chance to see aspects of the character that received limited attention in the books and film adaptations. The actor hinted that viewers will gain a better understanding of Draco's upbringing, relationships, and the influences that helped shape his personality.
“You get to see all the teachers in their little rooms. You get to see Draco at home. I won’t spoil too much about that, but there are some brilliant scenes at home where you start to get an insight into how he is,” he said.

Lox Pratt also hinted that Draco's family will play a more prominent role. His father, Lucius Malfoy, portrayed by Johnny Flynn, is expected to appear earlier in the story and could receive additional screen time. The actor praised Flynn and noted that their father-son dynamic works particularly well on screen, offering another layer to Draco's character development.
With eight episodes dedicated to adapting a single book, the Harry Potter series appears poised to explore corners of the Wizarding World that previous adaptations simply did not have time to cover. That expanded scope could allow viewers to experience more character-driven moments, deeper relationships, and storylines that were previously left on the page.
