John Kirby, the longtime acting coach and son of veteran character actor Bruce Kirby, died on Wednesday, July 15, at the age of 75 after living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, better known as ALS. His associate Nathan Besbitt confirmed the news through Instagram, sharing an emotional tribute that described the family's heartbreak following Kirby's passing. According to those close to him, Kirby had been diagnosed with ALS on June 7, 2023, after experiencing symptoms for nearly a year.
A severe fall that resulted in a fractured hip ultimately led doctors to identify the progressive neurological disease.
Although many moviegoers never saw his name on a poster, Kirby helped shape performances across several notable Hollywood productions. He was a trusted acting coach for Jim Caviezel throughout much of the actor's career, collaborating on films such as Frequency, Pay It Forward, Angel Eyes, The Count of Monte Cristo, High Crimes, I Am David, The Final Cut, Unknown, and Paul, Apostle of Christ. He also coached Caviezel during the 2009 television adaptation of The Prisoner. A public celebration of his life, post the Instagram announcement, is scheduled for August 15 at the Hall of Liberty in Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills.
Hollywood is often remembered through legendary faces, but the Kirby family built a remarkable legacy that stretched far beyond a single generation.
The Kirby family left an enduring mark on Hollywood

Bruno Kirby died from leukemia in 2006 at just 57 years old. With John Kirby's passing, another chapter of a remarkable Hollywood family comes to a close.
John Kirby may not have chased fame, but his influence will continue to live through the actors he mentored and the stories he helped bring to life. His career stands as a reminder that some of Hollywood's greatest artists leave their signatures behind the scenes rather than on the marquee.
