Jodie Foster recently singled out a blockbuster movie for feeling AI-made, and, it was Brad Pitt's hit movie, F1. The film has earned much praise for its thrilling racing scenes, breathtaking cinematography, and emotional storytelling. It was also present in this year's Oscars conversation.
Yet despite its acclaim, F1 is seemingly dragged into the debate on whether it is real or AI-made. After all, there is growing confusion among viewers who are finding it increasingly difficult to distinguish reality from AI-generated visuals. Whether a confusion or a critical observation, Foster used F1 to show AI's growing influence in Hollywood.

Actress and producer Jodie Foster recently sat down with former Sony Pictures CEO Michael Lynton for the Who Owns the Future of Hollywood? session at the Aspen Ideas Festival. During the conversation, she discussed several acclaimed films. And while speaking about Artificial Intelligence, she said the technology might already be here and that she felt Brad Pitt’s F1 movie was made using AI. She did not claim it or criticize it, but showed it as an example.
“I don’t say this disparagingly — how could I? This movie went on to make millions of dollars. But I look at a movie like ‘F1’ and I’m like, ‘F1’ was made by AI,”she said with a smile.
During the Who Owns the Future of Hollywood? session, Foster went on to talk about AI and its impact. But her comment on F1 came as quite a surprise, considering the success of the movie. The film earned four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and won Best Sound. It was also a major commercial success, grossing $634 million worldwide.
As for AI, the filmmakers have been clear that the movie relied heavily on practical effects and real-world filmmaking techniques rather than AI.
F1: The Movie was filmed at Grand Prix races
Director Joseph Kosinski's vision for F1 was to rely on practical effects as much as possible. Brad Pitt even drove the race car himself, as much as he was allowed, to make the film feel more authentic. However, certain scenes, such as crash scenes and vehicle damage, were created using visual effects, as per VFX supervisor Ryan Tudhope.
"We had two or three of our APXGP cars on the track, so in visual effects, we would replace those and add other cars in the background to make it feel like they were within the race,” Tudhope explained.

As per Tudhope, F1 features around 2,500 visual effects shots. Even so, one aspect of the film that was perhaps not artificially created was the atmosphere of the race crowds. Several scenes were filmed during real Formula One Grand Prix weekends. While the extensive use of real races for the movie was witnessed by many, the AI claims remain questionable.
