Robin Hood has long been portrayed as a heroic outlaw who stole from the rich to help the poor. Across countless films, television series, and stories, the legendary figure has often been presented as a symbol of justice and rebellion. However, modern filmmakers are increasingly revisiting familiar legends to uncover perspectives that challenge traditional narratives.
That approach is at the heart of The Death of Robin Hood, director Michael Sarnoski’s darker reimagining of the iconic character. During a recent interview, Jodie Comer reflected on the film’s unique perspective and why exploring a more nuanced version of Robin Hood felt both timely and necessary.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Jodie Comer praised Sarnoski’s decision to move away from the conventional portrayal of Robin Hood as an unquestioned hero. According to the actress, the filmmaker revisited early historical sources and created a version of the story that feels more grounded, complex, and human. The actress also pointed to one of the film’s central themes: breaking cycles of violence and confronting the consequences of past actions.
"Where has that gotten anyone? Where has it gotten Robin? She’s braced with a moment of, Now you have to practice what you preach. It’s easy to speak of these things, but it’s actually about how you are able to act on that within your own life, ” she said while reflecting on a pivotal moment involving her character, Sister Brigid.
For Jodie Comer as she told The Hollywood Reporter, the film’s willingness to explore moral gray areas is what makes the revisionist approach so compelling. Rather than presenting Robin Hood as a straightforward hero or villain, the story examines the consequences of his actions and challenges audiences to reconsider the myths that have surrounded the legendary outlaw for centuries.
While Comer has championed the film’s fresh perspective on a well-known legend, the movie has faced a very different challenge since arriving in theaters.
Hugh Jackman’s latest Robin Hood film struggles at the box office
While The Death of Robin Hood has generated discussion for its unconventional storytelling, its theatrical launch has been more challenging. The film stars Hugh Jackman in the title role and marks another collaboration between audiences and a beloved literary figure reimagined through a darker lens.
According to Deadline, the film is projected to earn approximately $2.5 million during its opening three days in North America from 1,762 theaters. The release is expected to finish outside the top tier of the domestic box office rankings, making it one of Jackman’s softest wide-release openings in recent years. Despite the slow start, the film’s distinctive take on the Robin Hood myth could continue attracting viewers interested in a more mature and reflective interpretation of the legendary outlaw.
