JK Simmons found out about his iconic casting as Spider-Man’s J. Jonah Jameson from a random guy rather than his agent. Over two decades, we have had three different actors taking up the mantle of Spider-Man, but none has dared to portray J. Jonah Jameson after JK Simmons immortalized the character with his manic humor. It is almost impossible to imagine anyone else playing the boisterous, cigar-chomping editor-in-chief of New York City’s Daily Bugle newspaper.
Getting the part must have been huge for JK Simmons, but his revelation of who he got the news from is hilariously astonishing.

It turns out that JK Simmons found out he received the part via a stranger who was connected to the lawless internet message boards at the beginning of the millennium, rather than from a call from his agent. The actor revealed what happened in a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused with Josh Horowitz podcast.
“Somebody in a cubicle slides out their desk chair and says, 'Congratulations.' And I was like, 'Okay, well, thanks for what?' And he said, 'Are you kidding me, Spider-Man?' And that was when I learned the power of the internet.” Simmons told the host. The actor said that before he even knew he had the role, a stranger at Grey Advertising who saw the news of his casting online congratulated him.
It all happened in a span of just one day when he auditioned for the role, in fact. The same afternoon, Simmons unexpectedly happened to find out about his casting while he was waiting for his audition for a voice-over role at Grey Advertising, as he recalled during the Happy Sad Confused with Josh Horowitz podcast.
There was one more interesting thing that he recalled from Spider-Man, and that was related to the director Sam Raimi.
JK Simmons shares his favorite Sam Raimi direction
Sam Raimi, who directed the first Spider-Man films starring Tobey Maguire in the titular role, was largely responsible for the trilogy’s cult following due to his unique direction. Talking about one of his favorite Sam Raimi directions given to him while filming Spider-Man 2, he said that the filmmaker asked him to show his “hideous mug in the frame” when the camera pans on him.

It was during the scene when Jameson’s daughter is getting married, and things are not going that well for the ardent detractor of Spider-Man. Anyhow, the iconic character that has made several cameos in the most recent Spider-Man films, like No Way Home, is confirmed by the actor not to return in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which releases on July 30, 2026.
