According to a report from Deadline, actor Jimmy Tatro has officially been tapped to portray the iconic villain Gorilla Grodd in the upcoming Superman spinoff series for HBO. The show, which centers on the daily exploits of Daily Planet photographer Jimmy Olsen (played by Skyler Gisondo), is being developed as a unique, true-crime-style docuseries satire. Written and executive produced by American Vandal creators Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault, the first season will heavily focus on Grodd, the hyper-intelligent, telepathic ape who has traditionally spent his days thwarting The Flash.

Jimmy Tatro’s casting brings a perfect blend of comedic timing and dramatic presence to the role, building heavily on his previous collaborations with Yacenda and Perrault. While HBO Max has declined to comment officially on the project's current greenlight status, the attachment of Tatro indicates that things are moving rapidly behind the scenes. This news also coincides with a remarkably busy era for Tatro, who is currently set to star alongside Will Ferrell in the upcoming Netflix comedy The Hawk and the film Judgment Day.
As excitement builds around Tatro taking on the mantle of the psychic simian, top executives are already dropping major hints about when production will officially kick off.
DC studios executive accidentally spills production timeline
A big Superman project seems to be picking up steam behind the scenes at DC Studios. In a new interview with Pedro Borges (aka @GoodNerd23), DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran was asked if the Justice League is actually coming to the DCU.
"We know eventually, you head in that direction. We really are just talking about those movies that we've announced and those projects we've announced,” the executive stressed. He then proceeded to confirm the long-since-pitched Superman TV show.
"We've talked about the Gorilla Grodd show for HBO that we'll start shooting this year. That's big news, by the way. I probably shouldn't have said that," he revealed, visibly giving away information meant to be kept under wraps.
