It is not every day that one gets to witness comedy king Jim Carrey speaking French! It was the biggest night in Paris, and the actor, who had been away from the spotlight in recent years, surprised everyone, stepping out in a sleek black tuxedo with long black hair. At the 51st César Film Awards, an unforgettable evening for Carrey, he accepted his Honorary César Award with teary eyes.

Calling it a full-circle experience, the actor recalled his French roots and how his journey began long ago.

Before starring in The Truman Show and How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Jim Carrey worked as a stand-up comedian in local clubs in Toronto. After several years of struggle and experience, he found his footing and eventually decided to move to Hollywood. Looking back on his journey to Los Angeles, he recalled that after receiving his César Award, he had learned that his great-great-great-grandfather had once moved from France to Canada, entirely in French.

“About three hundred years ago, my great-great-great-great-grandfather, Marc François Carrey, left Saint-Malo in France for Canada. Tonight, with this magnificent honor, this “square” has come full circle,” he said in French with a heavy American accent.

“Perhaps this is what my family was looking for,” he said.

The actor even laughed about his French and added that he had just begun learning the language. But whether his French was perfect or not, the emotion behind his words was felt by every member present at the event. After accepting the highest lifetime achievement award, he also went on to mention his family and expressed his heartfelt gratitude.

The award was presented to him by Michel Gondry, who worked with him on Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Another notable presence was Emmanuel Curtil, the French voice behind Carrey in many of his films, to honor him. Carrey had poured his heart out for each character and even for the Grinch throughout his career to win hearts.

That is why he is iconic, and it was evident at the event as several cheered for him. It was an emotional and nostalgic night not just for Carrey, but also for those who have laughed and been endlessly entertained by watching him over the years.
