Before starring in The Truman Show and How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Jim Carrey worked as a stand-up comedian in local clubs in Toronto. After several years of struggle and experience, he found his footing and eventually decided to move to Hollywood. Looking back on his journey to Los Angeles, he recalled that after receiving his César Award, he had learned that his great-great-great-grandfather had once moved from France to Canada, entirely in French.
“About three hundred years ago, my great-great-great-great-grandfather, Marc François Carrey, left Saint-Malo in France for Canada. Tonight, with this magnificent honor, this “square” has come full circle,” he said in French with a heavy American accent.
“Perhaps this is what my family was looking for,” he said.
The actor even laughed about his French and added that he had just begun learning the language. But whether his French was perfect or not, the emotion behind his words was felt by every member present at the event. After accepting the highest lifetime achievement award, he also went on to mention his family and expressed his heartfelt gratitude.
His family was present at the event to support the actor on this big day, where he not only thanked just them but also his father.
