While attending the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, Jesse Eisenberg revealed that his upcoming film The Debut, starring Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti, is set to launch at a film festival this fall before its US theatrical release on December 3 through A24. Although he declined to reveal which festival would host the premiere, he joked that the studio "will sue" if he disclosed the details. Speaking to ScreenDaily in an exclusive interview, Eisenberg also praised the film's early reception and his leading stars.
"We’ve been doing test screenings, and it plays like a crowd-pleaser," said the filmmaker, who added that Moore is "intuitively brilliant" while Giamatti "makes me cry every time."
He explained to ScreenDaily that The Debut captures the spirit of a 1990s independent film while delivering a surprisingly accessible story that has performed well with test audiences, adding that the strong early response reinforced the team's confidence in giving the film a festival launch ahead of its theatrical release. He also credited A24's support, saying the studio understood the film's unique style and had mapped out a release strategy that best suits its independent spirit.

"If you're an adult and interested in like the history of film, it's this really incredible movie that has all these funny like illusions to Old Hollywood. It's about, um, when the talkies came into Hollywood. So, you know, and the minions are trying to make their own movie," he said.
