The years of The Office were the good old days that both the cast and fans continue to look back on fondly. The show’s quirky characters and their life in a boring, monotonous workplace connected with people around the world, who laughed and grew attached to them. After nine seasons, the series and its characters left Dunder Mifflin and its devoted fandom.

And now, several years after the show ended, Jenna Fischer looked back on its finale and revealed who made the tough call to bid a proper goodbye to The Office.

Jenna Fischer recalled how The Office came to an end

Jenna Fischer recently appeared on Dinner’s On Me with Jesse Tyler Ferguson, where she reflected on her time on The Office. Speaking about the show’s ending, Fischer recalled that it was John Krasinski who suggested moving the show toward the final season. The idea was to bring everyone back for one final episode, giving the beloved characters and the series a proper farewell.

“It was actually John Krasinski who said, 'Gosh, it would be great if we could like call her out. If we could know that this is our last season and we could write toward that." Yeah and we can end it all together,” she said.

During the interview, she further explained the reason behind Krasinski’s call and shared that several members of the show, including Mindy Kaling and Michael Schur, had already left by the later seasons. The cast worried that if The Office continued for much longer, more members of the original team would move on. That ultimately pushed the cast, including Krasinski, who was also a producer on the series, to decide that it was time to bring the show to an end.

Fischer also added that NBC may have wanted the series to run for another year, but the cast and creative team wanted to bring everyone together for a proper ending. Steve Carell, who had left the show at the end of Season 7, returned for a surprise appearance in Season 9. B.J. Novak and Mindy Kaling also returned for the memorable final season.

But while The Office may have ended, viewers still return to Dunder Mifflin, keeping the show’s nostalgia alive. Years later, the beloved sitcom also got a spin-off.

What is The Paper?

Much like The Office, its spin-off The Paper is also a mockumentary sitcom. Created by Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, the new series follows the same documentary crew from The Office as they set out to film a new workplace and its bizarre struggles. This time, the story focuses on the Toledo Truth-Teller, an Ohio newspaper struggling to stay afloat in the digital age.

Domhnall Gleeson, Sabrina Impacciatore, Chelsea Frei, Melvin Gregg, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Alex Edelman, and Ramona Young lead the cast. Oscar Nuñez, who starred in The Office, returned to reprise his role. The Paper premiered in September 2025 and was renewed for a second season, which is set to return in September.
