Jeffrey Dean Morgan nearly landed a role in Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs, only to watch it slip away in the strangest audition of his early career. Before becoming the face of Negan, The Comedian, and a string of pop-culture antiheroes, Morgan found himself auditioning for the 1992 crime classic, with the last twist being that he lost the role.

Morgan, however, did not lose the role to a stranger. He lost it to the director giving him notes.

While recently appearing on Happy Sad Confused alongside Josh Horowitz, Jeffrey Dean Morgan looked back on his early audition for Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs and the bizarre callback that left him convinced he had landed the role. Morgan recalled auditioning for Ronnie Yeskel before being brought back to read for Tarantino himself, who was still relatively unknown at the time despite having written the script everyone in Hollywood was talking about.

“Quentin Tarantino ended up doing it. Yeah. Beat out by the director.” Morgan told Horowitz.

The callback took an unexpectedly intense turn when Tarantino pulled Morgan into a tiny coat closet, shut the door, and delivered his direction in complete darkness. Morgan remembered feeling Tarantino’s excitement and thinking, “Oh my god, I’m going to get this m**********”. But after waiting for the call, Morgan learned the role he had been chasing would instead be played by Tarantino himself, a casting twist that left the future Walking Dead star watching the filmmaker beat him at his own audition game.

However, and that almost-role was only the beginning of Morgan’s long, improbable climb from struggling actor to one of television’s most recognizable antiheroes.

Morgan’s breakthrough came after more than a decade of grinding through minor television roles and side jobs, with his career nearly collapsing before it finally exploded. In 2005, he landed Grey’s Anatomy, Supernatural and Weeds within the same week, with his heartbreaking turn as Denny Duquette transforming him into a household name. He later became John Winchester in Supernatural and eventually found his defining role as Negan in The Walking Dead, a performance powerful enough to earn the character his own spin-off, The Walking Dead: Dead City.

That run also turned Morgan into something of a pop-culture franchise collector, with major roles in Watchmen as The Comedian, The Boys as Joe Kessler, and Invincible as Agent Cecil Stedman, while his latest work keeps the momentum moving. He narrated Super Bowl Champions: The 2025 Seattle Seahawks, released on March 18, 2026, and recently joined the Prime Video thriller Sterling Point, which premiered all eight episodes on August 5, 2026, alongside his real-life son Augustus Morgan. Meanwhile, Neighborhood Watch remains among his recent films, while Fall 2: Deadpoint is set for September 2, 2026, though Morgan does not appear in the sequel.
