Jeffrey Dean Morgan almost quit acting because of one particular Star Trek role that left him miserable. Long before Negan turned him into a household name, Morgan spent years chasing work that rarely satisfied him creatively or personally. He recently opened up about the exact moment he considered walking away from Hollywood altogether. The story involves prosthetics, claustrophobia, and a realization that changed the entire trajectory of his career.

While the world knows him as a battle-scarred villain today, one alien costume nearly ended everything before it began.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan revealed that a minor Star Trek appearance nearly convinced him to abandon acting altogether. Early in his career, the actor took on a heavily prosthetic alien role that turned into a grueling, joyless production. Morgan discussed the experience on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, admitting the makeup process alone tested his limits. 

"I played a Zindy alien," He said.

He then added, "I was so claustrophobic, and not to mention you couldn't eat, and I was in it for 14 hours a day, and it just was an experience that I want to forget, and I still wake up sweating about it."

Before Hollywood came calling, Morgan survived on odd jobs and a brief run in graphic art after stints in New York and Seattle. He made posters for local rock bands and sold paintings for a few hundred dollars, enough to cover rent each month. His father often joked about the countless non-acting jobs Morgan held during those lean years. He also shared on Happy Sad Confused that his manager dropped him in his mid-thirties, just before he landed Grey's Anatomy, Supernatural, and Weeds together.

While those early struggles shaped his patience, his current schedule proves that persistence eventually paid off completely.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan now leads an entirely different chapter of his career, one built on steady, high-profile work rather than struggle. He continues playing Negan on The Walking Dead: Dead City, with season three currently airing since its July 2026 premiere to strong early reception. Morgan also returned to The Boys, appearing as Joe Kessler in a guest capacity during season five after a full season four run. Alongside that, he keeps voicing the villain Conquest on Invincible across its ongoing seasons.

Beyond established franchises, Morgan branched into hosting duties with NBC's Destination X and expanded his range with the film Neighborhood Watch and the animated series Big City Greens. He also appeared in the Prime Video drama Sterling Point alongside his son Gus Morgan, marking a proud family milestone. Given how packed his current schedule remains, it is almost impossible to imagine the same actor once ready to quit over one unbearable alien role.
