The Walking Dead: Dead City delivered one of its most shocking moments yet in the latest episode, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan believes Negan is only getting started. After a tense confrontation ended with Negan brutally executing Fabian and openly challenging Renata's authority, the fan-favorite character reminded viewers that despite his evolution over the years, he remains as unpredictable as ever. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Morgan reflected on the explosive scene and explained why he had been eagerly anticipating filming the pivotal moment.
For the actor, the sequence served as a reminder that while Negan's relationship with Maggie may have changed, his willingness to resort to extreme measures has not.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan explains why Negan remains unchanged
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Jeffrey Dean Morgan explained that Negan's shocking confrontation with Fabian was triggered by the character's threat against Maggie. According to the actor, Negan immediately made up his mind the moment Fabian suggested he would go after her.
"Fabian implies that he's gonna take out Maggie. And for Negan, that's an immediate decision." Jeffrey Dean Morgan said.
"He may have survived with just a bottle hit had he not said that and threatened Maggie." Morgan added. Morgan further said Fabian may have escaped with only a bottle to the head had he not crossed that line. The actor also admitted that the insults directed at Maggie during the scene genuinely irritated him while filming.

The actor went on to reveal on Entertainment Weekly that he had been eagerly waiting to film the sequence and particularly enjoyed the explosive exchange that followed. The actor also explained that the confrontation was ultimately about Negan breaking free from Renata's control and making it clear where he stood.
"Every scene I have with her, it's me basically telling her to f***off. And that is sort of the final f*** off. You don't have me. I don't fall for your s***." Morgan explained.
According to Morgan, the scene represented a major turning point for Negan.
Negan and Maggie May be closer, but Negan has not changed
One of the most notable aspects of the scene is what it reveals about Negan's current relationship with Maggie. While the pair have gradually moved beyond years of hostility, Morgan insisted that audiences should not mistake that progress for softness. According to the actor, much of Negan's behavior this season has been driven by a desire to protect Maggie while also pushing back against Renata's leadership and the community's rules.
That combination of loyalty, rebellion, and unpredictability continues to define the character. Morgan revealed that he never wants Negan to lose the qualities that made him such a compelling figure when he first appeared in The Walking Dead. While the character has grown significantly over the years, the actor believes there must always be a "loose cannon" element beneath the surface.

Morgan's comments also come as The Walking Dead franchise continues teasing the possibility of a larger reunion involving several fan-favorite characters. With tensions escalating and Negan openly daring Renata to "bring your army," the fallout from the episode appears far from over. If Morgan's comments are any indication, viewers can expect even more chaos as Dead City continues, with Negan embracing the side of himself he has spent years trying to keep in check.
