Javier Bardem is all set to reimagine one of the most terrifying fictional characters in history, yet he still felt chills during the table read with Martin Scorsese. The Skyfall actor is no stranger to playing cunning, brutal, and villainous roles throughout his career. His portrayal of Anton Chigurh in No Country for Old Men remains one of his most chilling performances.

And he will once again take on to play the dangerous character of Max Cady in the series remake Cape Fear, which is executive produced by Scorsese and Steven Spielberg. There is no doubt he will be quite good at it, but the actor recalled feeling briefly intimidated during the reading.

In an interview with Gold Derby, Javier Bardem shared that he saw a giant TV screen being pushed into the room during the first table read for the series Cape Fear, and it was Martin Scorsese on the screen. The legendary director, who also serves as an executive producer on the series, had joined the cast for the reading. Recalling the awkward silence that followed, Bardem admitted he felt nervous about saying his first line as Max Cady.

“Oh my God, the silence in the room. That was scary,” Bardem said. “To have to say my first line, as Max Cady, in front of Martin Scorsese. I was shaking. Like, how can I say anything in front of this master who [directed] the most amazing Max Cady?!”

Scorsese had previously reimagined the character in his acclaimed 1991 remake of Cape Fear, which itself was inspired by the 1962 film The Executioners, with Robert De Niro portraying Max Cady. As Barden shared, both Scorsese and Steven Spielberg were actively involved in the film

Bardem was not alone in feeling the tension. His co-star Amy Adams also shared feelings of tension in the room in the presence of the iconic filmmaker. Adams plays defense attorney Anna Bowden in the series.

“The biggest screen you ever saw gets wheeled in, and it has Martin Scorsese's face on it, and he's like, ‘Hi guys.’ We're like, ‘Oh… my… God.’”

Ahead of the series’ release, here is a closer look at the plot of the series.

What is the 2026 Cape Fear series about

Cape Fear follows the same story of revenge, grudges, fear, and intense psychological tension, based on John D. MacDonald’s novel The Executioners. The novel inspired both the 1962 original film and the 1991 remake. In the series, attorney Anna Bowden and her family’s lives are thrown into chaos when a man from their past, Max Cady, is released from prison nearly 17 years later.

This time, however, the show takes a more modern approach, incorporating modern elements into the narrative. As Javier Bardem revealed in an interview with Gold Derby, his character is "aware of technology" and uses it to "manipulate" and terrorize the Bowden family in more calculated ways. However, the heart and soul of the story remain the same. The series is set to premiere on June 5, 2026, on Apple TV+.
