Apparently, subtlety was not invited to this casting meeting, because The Turning Door has collected three acting titans. Javier Bardem can make menace look positively elegant, Marion Cotillard can break a heart with a glance, and Vanessa Redgrave can make practically any line sound like it belongs in the history books. From No Country for Old Men and La Vie en Rose to Julia, each has made transformation look deceptively effortless.

So, if The Turning Door needed a little acting magic behind the microphone, it certainly knows where to look.

If The Turning Door was looking for a little star power, it has apparently decided to bring the entire constellation. Oscar winners Javier Bardem, Marion Cotillard and Vanessa Redgrave are stepping behind the microphone for Nicholas Ashe Bateman’s family fantasy animation. Swedish composer Anna von Hausswolff and newcomer Pippa Kelly, voicing young heroine Ariadlyn, join them.

And that is only the newest layer of this rather extravagant voice ensemble. Alicia Vikander, Jamie Dornan, Jodie Turner-Smith, Bill Nighy and Gillian Anderson were already attached, giving the fantastical adventure a cast packed with instantly recognizable talent. The performers will also lend their voices to original songs and music from Claire Givens and Nicholas Ashe Bateman.

The story follows Ariadlyn after she discovers a mysterious box hidden in her parents’ closet, only for it to transform into a doorway to The Turning. On the other side awaits old magic, strange creatures, alchemy, dreams and songs, with Ariadlyn racing to find her way home and save her parents. Production is currently underway, with Kharmel Cochrane handling casting, and what a great job Cochrane has already done.

While all three are celebrated for their work on screen, they are no strangers to the microphone either, with Javier Bardem probably preferring voice work over a nerve-racking table read with Martin Scorsese.

Marion Cotillard has practically made the microphone another home, voicing The Rose in The Little Prince, April in April and the Extraordinary World, and Tutu in Dolittle. Javier Bardem has brought his unmistakable voice to King Solon in Spellbound and Automata, while Vanessa Redgrave has voiced Mama Topolino and The Queen in Cars 2 and narrated Call the Midwife.

That gives this trio plenty of experience creating characters without relying on a single raised eyebrow or dramatic close-up. Cotillard has jumped between French and English productions, Bardem has tackled fantasy and science fiction, and Redgrave has made narration practically an art form. With that vocal pedigree, The Turning Door has found quite the voice cast.
