Javier Bardem has just come off one of the most emotional premieres of his recent career, with Florian Zeller’s Bunker earning a roughly 15-and-a-half-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival. Bardem and his wife and co-star Penélope Cruz play a married couple whose relationship is tested when his architect character takes on a morally complicated bunker project for a tech billionaire. 

For an actor whose career has moved between Spanish cinema, Hollywood prestige dramas and blockbuster franchises, the applause is another reminder that Bardem remains one of the rare performers who can make a festival room stop and watch. And the accolades keep coming.

The Rome Film Festival will honor Bardem with a Lifetime Achievement Award, with Oscar-winning filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino set to present the statuette. Bardem will also be at the festival to present Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s The Beloved, which is screening in the event’s Best of the Fests section. The film first premiered in Competition at Cannes, where Bardem's performance as a troubled filmmaker drew considerable attention. 

As Variety reports, the Rome prize was announced by Salvatore Nastasi, president of Fondazione Cinema per Roma, with Paola Malanga serving as the festival’s artistic director. Sorrentino presenting the award adds another layer to the occasion: two Oscar-winning filmmakers meeting at a festival to mark a career that has included Before Night Falls, No Country for Old Men, Biutiful, Skyfall and Dune. Bardem will also soon return as Stilgar in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three, while his next phase includes the Amazon MGM romantic comedy Hello & Paris opposite Kate Hudson.

There is an especially neat piece of festival symmetry here. Bardem is arriving in Rome with a film that turns the machinery of filmmaking itself into a family battleground, making the tribute feel less like a retrospective pause and more like another chapter in an unusually active period of his career.

In Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s The Beloved, Javier Bardem plays Esteban Martínez, a celebrated Spanish filmmaker whose reputation is inseparable from a past marked by violence, addiction and excess. After years away, Esteban returns and draws his estranged daughter Emilia, played by Victoria Luengo, into his latest film under the guise of helping revive her stalled acting career. 

The setup gradually becomes something more complicated than a film-within-a-film story. As father and daughter work together, old wounds begin resurfacing, turning the production into an arena where artistic control, family resentment and buried history collide. Kino Lorber has acquired North American rights and plans a US awards-qualifying run later this year, followed by a wider theatrical release in early 2027. 

With Bunker fresh from Venice, The Beloved moving through the festival circuit and Dune: Part Three ahead, Bardem is entering another unusually busy stretch.
