Jason Momoa Joins Sony’s 'Helldivers' Movie Ahead of 2027 Release

Is there anything Jason Momoa cannot do? Over the past decade, Momoa has built a career on physicality, charisma, and a willingness to leap headfirst into worlds that demand total commitment. He inhabits ecosystems, whether mythic, futuristic, or animated, and bends them to his rhythm. That adaptability is exactly why his recent run of roles feels like a deliberate escalation. After landing parts in A Minecraft Movie and Legendary’s upcoming Street Fighter, Momoa is now charging into yet another video game universe, Helldivers.
If casting were a form of prophecy, Momoa’s new endeavor suggests a character forged in violence but sharpened by irony.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jason Momoa has secured the lead role in Helldivers, a video game adaptation directed by Justin Lin for Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions. The film draws inspiration from a game franchise launched in 2015 by Arrowhead Game Studios. Even the sequel, Helldivers 2, became a breakout success, selling over 12 million copies.
Sony has locked in a November 10, 2027, theatrical release, signaling real confidence in the project’s scale and appeal, as per The Hollywood Reporter. Beyond Helldivers, Momoa’s slate reads like a studio arms race. He will appear in Warner Bros. and Legendary’s A Minecraft Movie alongside Jack Black and Danielle Brooks. He recently starred in Amazon MGM’s The Wrecking Crew with Dave Bautista and Morena Baccarin.
Upcoming projects also include DC’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow as the notorious bounty hunter Lobo, the hybrid adventure Animal Friends opposite Ryan Reynolds, and a turn as Blanka in Street Fighter. Few actors move this fluidly between franchises without losing identity.
As Momoa's slate looks robust and packed, what makes his recent addition of Helldivers intriguing is its tone. It is a brutal, often absurd meditation on obedience, sacrifice, and propaganda. Translating that into live action could give Sony something rarer than spectacle: a blockbuster with teeth.
Helldivers: A war game with something to say
The screenplay originated with Gary Dauberman, known for shaping mainstream horror hits, before catching the attention of Justin Lin, whose action instincts are calibrated for speed, scale, and ensemble chaos. Set in a militarized sci-fi future, the story revolves around an elite force tasked with defending 'Super Earth' from relentless alien threats, a premise that blends dark comedy, authoritarian satire, and explosive action.

Sony and PlayStation continue a partnership that previously delivered Uncharted, a $407 million global hit. In live action, Helldivers has the potential to lean into both its kinetic battles and its unsettling subtext, crowds cheering endless war while soldiers are endlessly replaced. With Jason Momoa at the center, the film could balance satire and sincerity.
