Tom Holland is already navigating one of the most ambitious chapters of his career with Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film The Odyssey. Yet beyond the sweeping mythology and blockbuster scale of that production, another project is quietly revealing a different side of the actor. That project is The Partner, the upcoming adaptation of John Grisham’s celebrated legal thriller.

Holland is set to lead the film as its enigmatic protagonist. At the same time, the man calling the shots behind the camera is none other than Jason Bateman, who is enjoying one of the busiest and most creatively varied periods of his career.

Together, they may be assembling a thriller that sits somewhere between a legal chess match and a globe-spanning manhunt.

Jason Bateman sees a modern thriller taking shape with Tom Holland as its star

Jason Bateman is officially attached to direct The Partner, which is based on John Grisham's 1997 bestselling novel. Tom Holland will star as Patrick Lanigan, the brilliant attorney at the center of the story, while also serving as a producer. Speaking about the project and Holland's involvement, Bateman offered a glimpse into the creative vision behind the film.

"What does it look like today? Tom is going to be a great partner throughout. He brought it our way, and so I’m looking forward to collaborating with him." he said to Deadline.

The adaptation is being developed by Universal Pictures, with Academy Award-winning writer Graham Moore handling the screenplay.

The enthusiasm he exuded in the Deadline interview arrived during a remarkably productive stretch for Bateman. He currently has two limited series attracting awards attention: HBO Max's DTF St. Louis, where he plays an unsuspecting weatherman caught in a murder mystery alongside David Harbour and Linda Cardellini, and Netflix's Black Rabbit, where he portrays a troubled gambler opposite Jude Law. Bateman also directed Black Rabbit, earning industry recognition for his work behind the camera.

Bateman has spent the past few years moving effortlessly between crime dramas, and Grisham's novel operates in that same territory. To bring that world to life, Bateman will need a leading man capable of balancing charm with deception, vulnerability with strategy. That challenge now falls to Holland, whose next role could be one of the most transformative of his career.

Why Tom Holland may be perfect for Patrick Lanigan

Originally published in 1997, The Partner was John Grisham's eighth novel and remains one of his most intricate thrillers. The story follows Patrick Lanigan, a respected junior partner at a successful law firm in Biloxi, Mississippi. In a shocking twist, Patrick stages his own death in a devastating car accident, abandons his former life, and disappears with $90 million stolen from a corrupt client.

For Tom Holland, the role presents an opportunity to explore shades of ambiguity rarely seen in his previous leading performances. Patrick Lanigan is neither a conventional hero nor an outright villain. He is a master strategist operating several moves ahead of everyone around him, much like the carefully layered protagonists who populate Grisham's most memorable novels.

With Jason Bateman directing and Holland leading the charge, The Partner has the ingredients to become far more than a standard legal thriller. It could emerge as a smart, character-driven suspense story where every conversation feels like evidence and every revelation lands like a verdict.
