KJ Apa got the biggest seal of approval for his portrayal of James Stewart in Jimmy from the legend’s daughter. Stepping into the shoes of a cinematic legend is one of the most daunting challenges an actor can face, especially when bringing the life of a beloved Hollywood icon to the modern screen. While audiences often scrutinize every mannerism, voice inflection, and stylistic choice, the ultimate validation comes not from box office returns or critical acclaim, but from the family members who knew the star best.
Delivering a performance so strikingly authentic that it left those closest to the late actor utterly speechless, rising star KJ Apa has earned profound praise for his uncanny transformation in the upcoming biographical film Jimmy.
KJ Apa earns high praise from James Stewart’s daughter
As KJ Apa steps into the role of legendary actor and military aviator James Stewart in the upcoming biographical film Jimmy, he has officially secured the blessing of the screen icon’s own flesh and blood. Kelly Stewart-Harcourt voiced high praise for Apa's performance, admitting that watching him in full character while on set in Ireland felt downright "eerie."
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Stewart-Harcourt shared her relief that the young actor avoided a common trap. She noted that the major concern with casting someone as her father is avoiding a cheap “Jimmy Stewart impersonation for two hours,” especially given the screen legend's famously distinct cadence.

Praising Apa's nuanced approach, she emphasized to Entertainment Weekly that he manages to capture her father's essence and bring him to life organically rather than relying on caricature, concluding that she could not imagine anyone else taking on the role. Interestingly, Stewart-Harcourt also made a special cameo appearance in the Aaron Burns-directed movie, set to premiere on November 6.
Talking about his preparation for the character, Apa revealed he took inspiration from a celebrated classic from the legend’s filmography.
