When Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks brought Band of Brothers to HBO in 2001, they created a landmark World War II drama that also became a launching pad for several future stars. The series brought together a talented ensemble of relatively unknown actors. It challenged them with emotionally demanding roles and a grueling, military-style production. James McAvoy was among them. For a young actor just starting out, landing a role in such a high-profile production was a dream come true. But McAvoy’s experience on set was not quite the dream he might have expected.
On his first day filming Band of Brothers, McAvoy recalled being bullied by his co-stars.

During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, James McAvoy revealed that an unnamed co-star bullied him on his first day on the Band of Brothers set. After being shown a photo of the HBO series, he recalled the co-star getting a group of people to point at him and laugh for several minutes. McAvoy gave his overall experience on the show a nine out of ten, but rated that particular day just two out of ten.
“One of the guys in that picture decided to bully me, on my first day as a professional actor out of acting school,” McAvoy said.

According to McAvoy's interview, the incident unfolded during a crowded bar scene. While many cast members had spent nine or 10 months on the series only to receive a line here and there, McAvoy landed a more substantial role despite appearing in just one episode, a difference that reportedly frustrated some of the regular cast. Although he did not reveal the name of the bully, McAvoy ruled out David Schwimmer, as he was not among the actors in the picture during the interview.
James McAvoy joined Band of Brothers for Replacements, an episode widely regarded as one of the series’ finest and most important chapters.

Episode 4, titled Replacements, focuses on the tension between Easy Company’s seasoned veterans and the inexperienced soldiers joining their ranks. The men briefly rest in England before parachuting into German-occupied Holland for Operation Market Garden, a major Allied offensive intended to liberate Eindhoven and secure key bridges. James McAvoy’s Private First Class James W. Miller represents the new recruits, and his assignment to Staff Sergeant Denver “Bull” Randleman’s squad brings him into the orbit of one of Easy Company’s most respected veterans.

Unlike many regular cast members who spent nearly a year filming the series, often with only a few lines across multiple episodes, McAvoy's character had an arc, multiple scenes, and plenty of dialogue. This difference, as the actor himself admitted, sparked jealousy and resentment among cast members, leading to the bullying he later described.
