James Gunn has given DC fans another reason to lose sleep. A new look from the set of Man of Tomorrow has revealed Nicholas Hoult sporting one of Lex Luthor's most iconic comic-book upgrades, instantly igniting speculation across the fandom. And if DC history is any indication, trouble may once again be brewing for Metropolis.

If fans thought this was merely another behind-the-scenes tease, Gunn may have just unveiled the very weapon capable of bringing Superman to his knees.

Sharing the image alongside the caption, "Fit check. Live from the set of Man of Tomorrow," James Gunn gave fans their clearest look yet at Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor in the villain's iconic Warsuit. The bulky armour embraces the character's signature green-and-purple colour scheme, although this version appears noticeably heavier and more battle-ready than its comic-book counterparts. The reveal is especially intriguing given Gunn's recent tease that Superman and Lex will be forced to work together against a "much, much bigger threat," with the filmmaker also describing the sequel as "as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie."

“a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat.” Hmmm…Could that be Brainiac? It’s as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie,” Gunn told Howard Stern.

The armour remains one of the character's most famous comic-book creations, notably appearing in Action Comics #544, where Luthor unleashed the powerful suit in his quest for revenge against Superman. Interestingly, the same comic-era storyline also featured Brainiac, a character who is now confirmed to appear in Man of Tomorrow through Lars Eidinger's casting.

If the Warsuit reveal proved anything, it's that Man of Tomorrow is shaping up to be far more than a simple Superman sequel.

Superman and Lex Luthor may be forced into an unlikely alliance

Set for release on July 9, 2027, Man of Tomorrow will serve as James Gunn's follow-up to Superman and a major chapter in the DCU's Gods and Monsters saga. Rather than revisiting the familiar hero-versus-villain formula, the film is expected to place Superman and Lex Luthor on the same side of the battlefield as Earth faces a looming cosmic threat. For longtime DC fans, the prospect of the Man of Steel and his greatest enemy working together is already one of the sequel's most intriguing twists.

That threat appears to come in the form of Brainiac, the cold and calculating alien intelligence set to make his live-action big-screen debut. Lars Eidinger has been cast as the iconic villain, joining an expansive ensemble that includes David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Aaron Pierre, Milly Alcock, Adria Arjona, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, and Edi Gathegi. With production currently underway and multiple DCU heroes expected to cross paths, Man of Tomorrow is already shaping up to be one of DC Studios' most ambitious projects yet.

And with Lex Luthor's iconic Warsuit finally making its DCU debut, Man of Tomorrow is already giving fans plenty to speculate about long before Superman returns to the big screen.
