James Gunn began building his DC Universe with the first-ever show, Creature Commandos. Following the animated show's success, the filmmaker introduced Superman in 2025 and has since continued to slowly build several more pieces of his universe. While there are new characters and stories, his universe will also feature characters from his previous projects, The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker.

And this new lineup is quite interesting and features impressively powerful old and new characters. And if the recent films and shows are any indication, there will be far more fascinating characters to come. So, here is a closer look at the five most powerful characters in his universe so far.

Clayface is James Gunn’s third feature film, which takes a refreshing take on the character, his pain, and trauma. He is one of the most terrifying and powerful metahumans in Gunn’s DCU, with the ability to transform and take the shape of anyone he wants. What makes him even more dangerous is his ability to turn into a giant monster and transform his limbs into weapons to cause harm.

The character made his debut in Creature Commandos and has now appeared in the latest movie. While electric-based attacks can be used against him, he remains one of the most powerful characters in the universe.

Circe

Magic is something that even Kryptonians have struggled to evade. Another powerful character in James Gunn’s universe is Circe, who possesses abilities such as energy projection, telekinesis, teleportation, transmutation, and clairvoyance. She appeared in Creature Commandos Season 1 and is easily one of the most powerful characters in James Gunn's DCU.

Lobo

One of the most highly anticipated characters in James Gunn’s DC Universe was Lobo. The character made his debut in 2026’s Supergirl and is one of the most formidable characters in the universe so far. Apart from his incredible physical strength, what makes Lobo particularly impressive is his ability to recover from even the most severe injuries.

An enemy who can easily recover from serious injuries is certainly a frightening opponent.

Supergirl

Supergirl made her debut this year with her own standalone film. She possesses the same incredible Kryptonian abilities as Superman, including immense strength, speed, flight, and near-invulnerability. While she may have less experience than her cousin, Superman, she is still one of the most powerful characters in the DCU.
