The visionary architect of the new DC Universe has been assumed to be currently sifting through a pool of elite talent to find the perfect warrior queen. James Gunn has built a reputation for discovering actors who embody the soul of iconic comic book characters with precision. As the script for the Superman sequel takes shape, the search for a powerful female lead is intensifying. But the real answer lies only in the hands of James Gunn, which are fisted tight as of now, in strong denial.

Rumors about the filmmaker currently evaluating a trio of versatile performers for a role that demands both elegance and strength, have come to a standstill.

Deadline had earlier reported that James Gunn is currently conducting screen tests with Marisa Abela, Adria Arjona, and Ella Purnell for the role of Maxima in Man of Tomorrow. This character (introduced in Action Comics #645 in 1990) is a warrior queen from the planet Almerac who travels to Earth in search of a suitable husband. However, James Gunn came forth and denied all of Deadline's claims about any such cast testing.

"Deadline's reporting is shoddy & incorrect. If someone would have run these names by us we would have said it's b*******," Gunn explained via his Threads handle. Along with staunchly denying Deadline's claims, he expressed disappointed with the outlet that he had once deemed to be thorough in its journalism.

Gunn also detailed his connection with the three actresses mentioned. He acknowledged being an avid follower of films starring Marisa Abella and Ella Purnell, but admitted to never having crossed paths with them off-screen. Adria Arjona, on the other hand, happens to be a longtime friend of the filmmaker, having starred in the 2016 film, The Belko Experiment, which Gunn had written and produced.

Whether or not Maxima becomes a new addition, there is already an established ensemble that is preparing to face a catastrophic technological threat in the Superman sequel.

Expanding the cast for Man of Tomorrow

The successful candidate will join David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult, who are returning as Clark Kent and Lex Luthor. In a surprising turn, these long-time rivals must unite to defend the planet against Brainiac, played by newcomer Lars Eidinger.

This sequel aims to build upon the $618 million global success of the first film, released last summer, as per various outlets. The production will also feature the return of Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen. Aaron Pierre is expected to join the cinematic lineup, likely reprising his role as John Stewart from the upcoming Lanterns series.

Filming is scheduled to commence this April in Atlanta, with a firm release date set for July 9, 2027. James Gunn is once again directing from his own screenplay, ensuring his specific creative vision remains at the forefront of the project. The rumored casting of Maxima simply represents the nature of hiccups that tend to come in the way of blockbusters in the making, a cosmic threat, if one may.
