James Gunn taking the helm of the DCU was anticipated to usher in a renaissance for the studio. A new era of DC heroes seen through a fresh lens. And that did seem to be the case, with the hype surrounding Superman last year, followed by Supergirl. However, Superman achieved only moderate commercial success, while Supergirl became a massive box-office bomb. Nevertheless, Gunn is not losing hope and plans to stick around in the DC universe. 

According to a new report, Gunn has taken active steps to ensure that he remains at the studio for years to come.

Jeff Sneider via his platform, The InSneider, recently broke the scoop that James Gunn's contract has officially been extended to ensure he stays long-term within the franchise. 

"He will [stick around]. He just extended," Sneider said. 

This report came amidst rumors that DCU will potentially part ways with the filmmaker due to a potential Warner Bros. Discovery merger. The current streak of underwhelming box office performances has only added fuel to these rumors. 

Superman 2025 was anticipated as a potential billion-dollar blockbuster to launch a new DC universe. However, it only earned a modest $618 million. Meanwhile, Supergirl did not even manage to earn a modest business. It fell significantly short of pre-release expectations, landing a mere $62.6 million globally during its opening frame.

Despite these shortcomings, Gunn has a plate full of upcoming DCU releases, include some that are yet to be announced. 

Following Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Clayface is anticipated to have a late 2026 release. Directed by James Watkins, starring Matt Hagen and written by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, it will be the third film in the DC Universe. This will be followed by Man of Tomorrow on July 9, 2027, which will take forward Superman's story in the new DCU continuity. 

Apart from that, The Brave and the Bold, introducing the DCU's new Batman alongside Damian Wayn, an untitled Wonder Woman film and James Mangold's Swamp Thing are yet to be announced. An animated origin film exploring the early friendship of Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, titled Dynamic Duo, is also in the pipeline. And if the InSneider report holds any truth, it seems like we will be seeing James Gunn's touch on these projects as well.
