Siblings who read comics together end up delving into the superhero world together as well. James Gunn, on his way to becoming DC’s trademark superhero helmer, seems not to have forgotten the companion to his passions. Even as he celebrates DC’s in-house: the Creature Commandos star Weasel, Gunn has found ways to bring his super-sibling bond with Sean Gunn out into the sunlight. And Sean Gunn, who gave Weasel the shape, form, and breath to stand upright in the DCU, can almost bask in it.

With twin surnames yet wide-flanking rosters of their own, James Gunn and Sean Gunn seem to maintain uncanny yet endearing presences in each other’s work.

There may be a few who have not heard of him, but true to his name, Weasel found a way to the screens through James Gunn. Minimally appearing through the franchise, the filmmaker brought the supervillain to life in his DC reclamation project. The first instance was with Suicide Squad in 2021, and who better suited the role than Sean Gunn and his Rocket Raccoon-studded portfolio?

Come 2026, even James Gunn has acknowledged the fact, deeming it important even through a celebration solely orchestrated for Weasel and his creators, in an X post.

“I’ll always have a special place in my heart for Weasel, portrayed by the one and only Sean Gunn,” James wrote.

The two brothers have had a longstanding creative partnership spanning over two decades, starting from the 1996 film Tromeo and Juliet, which strongly transcended into the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. Superman can be marked as one of their most recent on-screen alliances, where Sean Gunn portrayed the supervillain Maxwell Lord.

James Gunn’s super plans after Superman

Following the slight supervision struggle and domestic box office success of Superman, James Gunn's embarkation on creating a Super-Family was made known in August 2025 via Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav. In the following month, Gunn announced the extension to his "Superman Saga," with the title set as Man of Tomorrow. So far, the film has been locked for release on July 9, 2027, with filming set to begin in April 2026.

In addition, Gunn has revealed the movie to be a juggle between being a Superman or Lex Luthor-centric installation in the DCU.
