James Gunn knows how to make misfit superheroes steal the show, from Superman’s earnest optimism to Peacemaker’s gloriously messy antics. But can great characters build a universe? His DCU leadership has earned creative praise while raising questions about the bigger picture, leaving fans wondering where all these capes are headed. James Gunn’s tenure running the new DC Universe has been defined by a stark divide between massive creative praise and mounting logistical skepticism.
Now, Gunn is answering the world-building doubters with a Star Wars-inspired strategy that aims to make the DCU feel bigger than its heroes.

James Gunn is not interested in making every DC superhero take a number and wait for the next big crossover. While his DC Universe has earned praise for projects like Superman and Peacemaker, questions about the franchise’s long-term direction have continued to surface. One fan recently asked what the new lineup was actually building toward, prompting Gunn to explain his approach on Threads.
"I dislike the idea that individual stories aren't meaningful unless they lead to something else," he said.
Responding to the discussion on Threads, Gunn compared his DC Universe strategy to Star Wars, arguing that audiences can enter the fictional world at different points and still enjoy individual stories. He acknowledged that connectivity remains part of the plan, but insisted that standalone projects should not need a larger franchise payoff to justify their existence.

Gunn also clarified on Threads that the Superman Saga will continue from Superman into Man of Tomorrow and beyond, bringing together characters introduced across different DCU projects. However, that connective tissue does not make every film a glorified setup for the next crossover. Gunn specifically hopes audiences watch Clayface because it works as a fun horror movie, rather than anticipating the character's next appearance. Probably he will get the same response once people claim that he hijacked Clayface.
And this is not the first time James Gunn has pulled Star Wars out of his galaxy-sized bag of tricks to explain his DCU vision.
James Gunn has a Star Wars vision for DC
James Gunn wants the DC Universe to feel like a world audiences can simply step into, not a puzzle requiring several hours of homework. His approach echoes Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, which introduced viewers to a galaxy that already felt lived-in rather than pausing to explain every corner of its mythology. That gives individual DC stories room to breathe.

This approach also leaves space for wildly different genres without forcing every project into the same narrative mold. A horror film like Clayface can establish its own identity while still belonging to the larger DC Universe, and a superhero adventure can explore another corner without explaining every connection. Ultimately, Gunn’s Star Wars-inspired vision puts storytelling first, with the wider universe adding depth rather than demanding attention.
