Titanic returns to the US audience just in time for Christmas

It is the holiday season, and Netflix has rolled out a slew of movies, both old and new, for its viewers, including the timeless classic Titanic. James Cameron’s epic (1997) has made several appearances on Netflix over the years, with its most recent return in 2023.

The movie continues to be loved across generations. Titanic, which won 11 Oscars, was a massive success upon its release. It became the first film to gross $1 billion at the box office and earned nearly $2.2 billion worldwide.

The story follows the real tragic incident of the Titanic, along with the fictional romance of a penniless artist, Jack, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, and first-class passenger Rose, portrayed by Kate Winslet. Even 28 years after its release, Cameron’s version of Titanic remains memorable.

But there is a reason the movie featuring Leonardo DiCaprio continues to feel so iconic, and why it still stands apart from the rest.

Why the Titanic is still a cinematic masterpiece

A whopping $200 million was spent on James Cameron’s Titanic. This was a massive budget at the time, which intrigued many. The cutting-edge CGI wowed audiences.

Cameron’s efforts were equally impressive. He reportedly commissioned a 775-foot partial replica of the ship to film the famous sinking scenes. The director also traveled to the Titanic wreck site 33 times to secure raw footage used in the movie.

His attention to detail is the heart of the movie. Whether it is the Heart of the Ocean necklace, the famous pose of Jack and Rose at the ship’s bow, or Celine Dion’s unforgettable 'My Heart Will Go On,' these moments became a huge part of the movie and pop culture history.

So, whether Titanic 2 ever gets made or not, this might just be the right time to revisit the timeless piece this Christmas!
