Before Titanic became one of the highest-grossing films of all time with its whopping $2.2 billion run, its production was fraught with rising costs, repeated delays, and mounting skepticism from the studio. The budget kept soaring well beyond its initial estimates, and there were fears for the financial future of the film, with many predicting an expensive failure. Talking to Howard Stern in 1997, James Cameron opened up about the struggle.
“They were looking for headlines like, ‘Titanic sinks again. When the budget went over, I returned all my money. Didn’t want them to think we lied just to get the movie made. I gave up my backend I gave up my salary," he recalled on The Howard Stern Show back in the day, talking about the financial sacrifices he made during Titanic’s troubled production.
For context, Titanic, which is now on Netflix, was a huge commercial success, racking up $2.264 billion worldwide across its theatrical releases. It earned around $674.4 million at the domestic box office and $1.590 billion internationally. The movie was the highest-grossing movie of all time when it was first released. The many re-releases over time have increased its gross at the box office.
The film's extraordinary box office success was only part of the story behind its enduring legacy.
James Cameron's vision made Titanic a cinematic landmark
Titanic was written, directed, produced, and co-edited by James Cameron. He created the story, merging a fictional romance with the real-life tragedy of the RMS Titanic, while overseeing virtually every creative aspect of the production. Cameron was heavily involved in the casting, production design, cinematography, and groundbreaking visual effects of the film to make sure the project was in line with his grand vision.
Besides his film work, Cameron researched the Titanic disaster for years. He went down several times to the actual site of the wreck, consulted historians and marine experts, and painstakingly incorporated historical detail into the film’s recreation of the ship and its sinking. His attention to detail, along with revolutionary ways of filmmaking, made Titanic one of the greatest movies in film history.

It was Cameron who chose to make Titanic despite people being skeptical about its success, where he had nothing to gain initially because of his confidence in this endeavor. By deciding to sacrifice his salary and participating personally in the making of this movie, every single detail of which he supervised, he managed to create one of the greatest box-office movies of all time. The story of the Titanic is an indication of the fact that it was not only the box office figures that made it such a success.
