Avatar: Fire and Ash has not only conquered the screens but also the hearts of the viewers with its thrilling new adventures in Pandora. As it dominates the global box office, James Cameron feels the pressure to reveal what comes next.

The third installment of the legendary saga has already been among the most talked-about films of 2025, offering a treat of amazing visuals and deep emotional conflicts. But now, everyone is curious about what Cameron has to say about the future of the franchise. 

Cameron's note on Avatar 4 is as vibrant and hilarious as expected from the iconic auteur.

MovieZine inquired with James Cameron about the status of Avatar 4 following the massive success of Fire and Ash. The director's response was not only humorous but also very informative as he used a memorable metaphor.

"I’m gonna pose a metaphor to you: When a woman is in labor, she’s just crowning, would you ask her about her next child?" Cameron told the outlet. Stumping MovieZine, he added, "Okay, I just delivered this thing."

But Cameron considered the mounting curiosity towards where the story goes next after Fire and Ash as a good and positive sign, as he further explained to the outlet. For him, this meant his audience loved Avatar 3 enough to crave more.

The legendary filmmaker's hilarious yet sensible metaphor indicated not only his unwillingness to talk about the fourth installment of the beloved franchise, but also urged viewers to relish Avatar: Fire and Ash, for the time being. December 19, 2025, marked the United States theatrical release of the film. Avatar 4 naturally has to wait for its time to shine, but its crumbs are everywhere.

Despite being in crowning, as he claims, James Cameron has not totally shied away from dropping Avatar 4's updates elsewhere.

James Cameron already said in various interviews that the sequels, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, are already scripted and planned, but their fate relies heavily on Fire and Ash's success. As of now, Avatar 4 is set for a December 21, 2029, release. 

Speaking to io9, Cameron affirmed his intention to direct both sequels. Calling them a new saga, he emphasized, “It’s got a beginning and a middle and an end that plays out across these two films. They’re vaporware right now.”  

Cameron also said he would tell the rest of his story in a book, speaking on The Town with Matthew Belloni podcast, if Fire and Ash did not meet his expectations. Taking an educated guess from the director's notes, if the stars align, Avatar 4 will soon receive fresh updates.

However, now is the time to run to the theatres to be mesmerized by Avatar: Fire and Ash. It will likely head to Disney+ for streaming, but the wait might be too painful.
