Jake Gyllenhaal Gives a Dubious Response on the Possibility of Mysterio’s Appearance in 'Avengers: Doomsday'

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has evolved into a whole other world where characters - does not matter dead or alive, from timelines, or even from different franchises - can make an appearance anywhere and in any film. This bizarre possibility was a byproduct of the introduction of the multiverse, and for fans it is a gift which lets them see some of their favorite characters together in action.

But this has become a headache for actors who have ever played any character in the MCU because wherever they go they are bombarded with the question whether they are going to be a part of a specific movie or not.

A similar thing happened to Jake Gyllenhaal who was at an event for his new film The Bride! He was asked about the possibility of his character Mysterio being in Avengers: Doomsday

Jake Gyllenhaal’s dodgy response on a possible cameo in Avengers: Doomsday

While Jake Gyllenhaal was talking about his new movie The Bride! with Entertainment Tonight, the reporter asked him whether he would like to see a version of his character Mysterio in the Avengers: Doomsday. The actor seemed amused at the question and tried to be evasive, stating that he is not aware of any such developments. He further said that he is not the right person to ask this.

“Oh man, I’m…I’m not the one to ask about that.” This short answer does not necessarily end the discourse around a possible Mysterio appearance in the movie, but it is also not enough to start banking on this possibility. All this statement does is keep fans in the dark about his involvement.

We first saw Mysterio in the 2019 film Spider-Man: Far From Home where he played the main antagonist - and a shrewd one indeed. He tricked Peter into thinking that he is a friend but had ulterior motives. In the final showdown, he was shown to be shot by one of his own drone but his death was never confirmed.

Well, one cannot help but wonder about the fate of Mysterio in the MCU when it is still unclear if he is alive or not.

Is there any official confirmation on Mysterio’s fate?

Amy Pascal, the producer of Spider-Man: Far From Home, was asked in a 2019 interview with Comicbook.com about Mysterio’s death. She didn’t confirm, leaving the fans open to interpretation. “You don’t know,” was all she said, and the discussions on the internet started going crazy.

In 2022, Chris McKenna, co-writer of Spider-Man: No Way Home, talked to ComicBook Resources about a concept art where Mysterio was seen fighting Doctor Strange. According to him, the inclusion of the multiverse has really allowed conversations like these to happen in the first place. Even though the idea was not included in the film, it is tantalising even to think about something like this.

Ideas and statements like these have given wind to the rising questions about Mysterio’s cameo in the movie. It is not just him, but there are a lot of characters in consideration for a potential Avengers: Doomsday appearance. The burden of expectations from this film is really heavy, and whether the makers can deliver under such pressure is a whole other story.
