Jackie Chan Leads Chinese Presence at Berlinale With 'Unexpected Family'

Jackie Chan is an artist who has enthralled generations with his awe-inspiring action and physics-defying stunts. And he has effortlessly done that in almost all of his action-comedy films. But that does not mean he cannot take on complex characters. The 71-year-old has continued to impress, excelling not only in action but also in emotionally rich films, Police Story being one such shining example.  

Now, he is even leading at the 2026 Berlin Film Festival with his new film where he plays a character much different from his action heavy role.

Jackie Chan’s Unexpected Family to feature at 2026 Berlin Film Festival

Golden Network Asia is set to introduce Jackie Chan’s latest dramedy, Unexpected Family, to international audiences by bringing it to the 2026 Berlin Film Festival and European Film Market. The film is already screening in theaters across China, Macau, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, New Zealand, Indonesia, Australia, and Myanmar. And this heartwarming masterpiece will soon be released in North America in February.

Directed by Li Taiyan, this comedy drama follows Ren Jiqing, played by Jackie Chan, struggling with Alzheimer's disease as he mistakes a tenant, Zhong Bufan, as his long-lost son. With Su Xiaoyue, Jia Ye (Pan), and Jin Zhengu (Li) sharing the same household, the film deals with family, relationship and connections.

While Jackie Chan has dipped his feet in complex characters such as this, action has never left him. Before Unexpected Family, he also starred in another action-heavy film, The Shadow’s Edge. However, it was not his usual thirst for jumping out of the 10th floor that made him do the role, but another intriguing reason.

Jackie Chan has acted in several action films throughout his career, and many of those saw him play the role of a cop. So, while he understandably wanted to take a step back, the actor ultimately said yes to Larry Yang’s The Shadow’s Edge, and there is a special reason behind it.

During his interview with Variety, he said that he was impressed with director Larry Yang’s intriguing presentation of the movie. And he simply could not give up the movie.

Earlier hesitant to even do the first, now, there is also a chance that the actor could return to reprise his role in the next installment.

Jackie Chan has easily handled both roles requiring action as well as those full of heart and emotion. Unexpected Family is just another gem to add to the list.
