Sacha Baron Cohen has finally revealed why it took two decades for Ali G to make his big-screen comeback, and the character’s explanation is as outrageous as fans might expect. The fictional Staines-based wannabe gangster became one of Cohen’s most recognizable creations after making his debut in 1998.

Between his mangled slang, absurd interviews, and unapologetically clueless persona, Ali G became a cultural phenomenon who could turn even the most serious conversations into comedy. His last major cinematic outing, Ali G Indahouse, arrived in 2002, leaving fans waiting more than 20 years for another movie.

Now, as Cohen is back, he has offered his own very Ali G explanation for the lengthy absence.

Sacha Baron Cohen’s Ali G says he was too busy “boning” to return

Speaking to Variety at the Los Angeles premiere of Ali G: Who Iz I? on October 14, Cohen was asked why it had taken 20 years for the character to return. He shared the why as being busy with not one, but many things during that period.

“I've been very busy, I've been boning, I've been w****** a lot, I've been toking,” he replied, before joking that time had simply passed. But Ali G also had a more business-related explanation.

Cohen shared with Variety that the character claimed to have negotiated with HBO after two seasons of his show, only for discussions about a third season to collapse. Ali G alleged that he had been treated poorly despite believing he had delivered enormous value, insisting that he had stood his ground for two decades.

“If you've got a dream, give it up,” he joked, turning the story of a long-awaited comeback into a deliberately terrible lesson in perseverance.

But the extended break is only part of the story. Ali G’s return also brings a new film that places his outrageous persona back in the spotlight.

What is Ali G: Who Iz I? about?

Ali G: Who Iz I? follows Ali G after 20 years of “chillin’, tokin’ and bonin’,” when he discovers that his longtime girlfriend, Julie, is eight months pregnant. Faced with impending fatherhood, he heads to America to reclaim his former glory, only to encounter people who threaten his and his child’s future.

Cohen writes, directs, and stars in the film, with Morgana Robinson playing Julie. The movie marks his feature directorial debut and is scheduled to hit theaters on October 23, 2026. However, its comeback has already faced growing backlash after its controversial first trailer, leaving audiences divided over whether Ali G’s humor still has a place in today’s cultural climate.

Whether Ali G’s comeback wins over a new generation or fuels more controversy, one thing is certain: after 20 years away, he has no intention of returning quietly.
