The Britney Spears biopic finally has a fresh update, and the woman behind the script, Elizabeth Meriwether, insists timing could not be better. For years, talk of adapting the pop icon's turbulent journey into a film moved slowly, if at all. Spears rose from teenage sensation to global superstar before a conservatorship reshaped nearly every corner of her life. Now, a familiar television voice is stepping in to translate that story, and early signs hint at something thoughtful taking shape.
While speculation has lingered for years about who might finally bring this story to life, one screenwriter is proving she has already begun the work.

Elizabeth Meriwether, the mind behind New Girl, confirmed that development on the Britney Spears biopic is officially underway, though still in its earliest stages.
"I'm really at the beginning of the process of thinking about it," Meriwether admitted while speaking with Vanity Fair.
She then added, "I do think it’s the right time for this movie and the right moment to be looking back and thinking about it."
Meriwether's comments confirm the project finally has real momentum behind it.

Beyond the confirmation itself, Vanity Fair revealed further context on how this adaptation came together. Universal Pictures acquired rights to Spears' memoir back in 2024, bringing director Jon M. Chu and producer Marc Platt onto the project, with Meriwether now shaping the screenplay. The assignment also marks her long-awaited return to feature writing since 2011, following years spent building television hits like Dying for S** and Furious. Working alongside Chu and Platt, Meriwether described the collaborative process as refreshingly different from running her own shows.
While Meriwether revisits Britney's past on paper, the two people closest to it are already writing chapters of their own.
Sean Preston Federline and Jayden James Federline step into their own spotlight
Jayden James Federline and his older brother Sean Preston Federline have both started building public profiles far removed from their mother's pop stardom. Jayden James Federline, now nineteen, recently walked the runway during Vetements' Paris Fashion Week presentation before landing an editorial feature with MAC Cosmetics inside its digital publication, MACzine. Sean Preston Federline, twenty, followed a similar path, making his own runway debut at the brand's Spring/Summer 2027 menswear show after an invitation from creative director Guram Gvasalia. Both brothers have hinted that music remains close to their hearts as they explore these new creative avenues.

Britney Spears has remained closely involved despite years of distance from her sons. She reunited with them for the 2024 holiday season and, ahead of their Paris debut, sent flowers to their hotel while staying in touch through calls and messages. As Sean Preston Federline and Jayden James Federline step confidently into their own careers, their mother's story is simultaneously being prepared for the big screen. Both chapters of the Spears family narrative appear to be unfolding at once.
