For decades, Christopher Nolan has cultivated a reputation for expanding the limits of blockbuster filmmaking, combining psychological tension with large-scale spectacle across a range of genres. His movies have dealt with fear, survival, and the unknown, but the acclaimed director has never gone all the way into horror. Yet, many of his most memorable scenes have carried unmistakable horror elements, leaving audiences to wonder if a true Nolan horror film is just a matter of time.

That long-standing curiosity has now been addressed, with Nolan revealing exactly what has kept him from making a full-fledged horror film.

Christopher Nolan has himself admitted that the creation of the horror movie has always been one of his ambitions, but he still thinks that the genre requires an absolutely unique and strong main idea. Despite his love for horror, Nolan recently confessed during the Empire Podcast interview that he has not found a story that was good enough to make it his project. The main element of the genre, according to the famous filmmaker, is its ability to make a fast reaction in the audience.

“I’ve always been interested in doing a horror film. Of all genres, it’s the most visceral. That is to say, you’re trying to make people literally feel something in their bones,” Nolan said, only adding further to the mystery of his opting for a horror script.

Nolan further claims that horror movies can be considered good only if they are made on the basis of a strong main idea. At the same time, he confessed that he had never found an idea that could be good enough to create his movie.

"I’ve never clicked with a particular idea or concept that worked for me," he revealed in his Empire interview.

He stressed that it is important to note that the genre of horror is unique because it requires an immediate reaction from the audience, which can be felt physically.

Think Christopher Nolan’s 'The Odyssey' Is the First? Here Are All the Previous Adaptations of Homer’s Classic

Although Nolan is still waiting for the right horror concept, many believe his recent adaptation of The Odyssey already contains some of the genre's most chilling elements.

How did The Odyssey showcase Christopher Nolan's closest brush with horror?

One of the most terrifying episodes in The Odyssey is when Odysseus and his crew are trapped inside the cave of a Cyclops, a giant with one eye, who begins to eat the men one by one. Unable to defeat the monster, Odysseus resorts to trickery and then blinds him with a red-hot wooden stake. The crew manages to get away by hiding with the sheep, but the encounter angers Poseidon and sets the scene for Odysseus’ long journey home.

Additionally, the scene with the Laestrygonians also had horror elements. Laestrygonians can be described as one of the most deadly conflicts that Odysseus has been in during his journey. Unlike the individual giant called Cyclops, this is an entire race of massive c******** who attack Odysseus and his men with tremendous force. With boulders being thrown down at the ships and soldiers k****** people, nearly all of the ships are destroyed except for Odysseus's.

As of now, Christopher Nolan has stated that he seemingly does not have any interest in making a movie in the horror genre, but mostly because he has not found the appropriate storyline yet. Over several years, the multiple award-winning director has established a name for himself by taking the idea of blockbusters beyond their limits by infusing both psychology and spectacle into them through different genres. Though his movies deal with various aspects such as fear, survival, and the unknown, Nolan has not yet taken the plunge into the genre of horror.
