Joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe was both exciting and intimidating for Sadie Sink. The actress had already made a name for herself on the big screen and rose to global fame as Max Mayfield in Stranger Things, carrying the role through four seasons of one of Netflix’s biggest franchises. She has also shared the screen with several major Hollywood stars in a string of notable films. 

However, none of that experience was enough to make her feel completely at ease when it came time to make her MCU debut in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Sadie Sink recently appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to talk about her MCU debut and what it was like stepping into one of Hollywood’s biggest franchises. The actress plays one of the movie’s crucial roles as Jean Grey, who is a powerful telepathic mutant. While discussing Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Sink opened up about the emotions that came with joining Marvel, as she called the experience daunting.

“It's scary, joining such a big franchise, and they've been out of like 10 years that cast,” she told Fallon.

When asked whether the MCU was everything she had imagined, Sink agreed, admitting that the experience of witnessing the Spider-Man world felt surreal. During the conversation, Fallon also asked the actress about her favorite Spider-Man. Unsurprisingly, the 24-year-old chose Tom Holland’s version, revealing that Spider-Man: Homecoming was actually the first Spider-Man movie she ever watched.

"Tom was the first Spider-Man I saw. Homecoming," she said. "He is my favorite. He is just the best."

While stepping into the MCU may have been a scary experience for the actress, it is safe to say she managed to avoid the terrifying part of it.

Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige shared during a Spider-Man: Brand New Day press conference that Sadie Sink did not have to audition for her role as Jean Grey in the movie. One reason may be that Sink had previously worked with the film’s director, Destin Daniel Cretton, on the 2017 movie The Glass Castle, which may have given Marvel a strong vision of her talent and potential.  However, being cast in a Marvel project without an audition is a rare privilege for any actor.   

Later, in a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Feige explained that Marvel already had Peter Parker’s story mapped out as well as the characters around him. And as he shared, Sink’s casting ultimately helped solidify "the idea of the character" she played in the movie. It seems to have been a perfect match for the actress, the character, and the story in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
