Ethan Hawke did not sugarcoat his views on what immense fame can feel like for an artist. Being a celebrity and constantly in the spotlight is not as easy or entertaining as it may appear. It comes with responsibility, expectations, and, sometimes, immense pressure. Hawke is well aware of the impact fame can have on a person and has always been candid about sharing his experiences and opinions with others.

Most recently, the actor shared yet another eye-opening look at what fame can feel like.

Ethan Hawke opens up about fame

Ethan Hawke recently sat with GQ’s Zach Baron for One More Question and spoke about his life, career, movies, and much more. When asked about an intriguing quote, “Fame is Black Death,” from his book, The Hottest Slate, the actor did not reveal whether it was his own thought or the character's. However, the actor shared a few words about fame and what he meant by the quote.

“I wouldn't be the first person to say that there's an aspect of celebrity that is like a disease and you can handle little bits of it. It's a form of isolation and a form. It's like being put in a zoo, right? And zoo animals go nuts, and so do human beings,” he said.

During the interview, he further opened up about the benefits of fame, such as earning money and receiving immense appreciation. However, he added that not knowing who is being genuine in their words and praise can also be a source of pressure. The actor explained that understanding fame and making the most of it is extremely important. Hawke believes that people can do many great things with their fame, like he aspires to use his to make good films.

The actor also shared a fascinating perspective on his fame.

Ethan Hawke talks about enjoying his fame

Ethan Hawke was asked in the same interview whether he believes there are people in the new generation who are unaware of his career or fail to recognise him. As shocking as it may sound, the actor agreed and even revealed an incident at an airport when a fan was surprised to realise that he was still working. However, he shared that he is happy with this level of fame.

"I have a certain level of fame that is very pleasing to me, if I'm allowed to say that, which is that I'm getting to work with really talented people, and I really can go to the grocery store. And there's a certain level of fame above me, where life gets really uncomfortable,” he said.
