George Clooney has questioned whether Paramount’s proposed merger with Warner Bros. makes financial sense, warning that another major Hollywood consolidation could cost people their jobs. Clooney has spent decades moving effortlessly between movie-star glamour and sharp-edged Hollywood commentary, whether he is behind the camera, in front of it, or simply holding court at a festival press conference. The actor is now watching that machinery shift again, and he is not exactly convinced the gears will turn smoothly, especially when it comes to the money behind it. 

As Variety reported, George Clooney addressed Paramount’s pending merger with Warner Bros. during a press conference at this years Venice Film Festival. He described the proposed combination as “a complicated thing” and admitted that he “doesn’t know how it works out.” Rather than weighing in with a simple verdict on the proposed transaction, Clooney questioned its underlying financial logic. 

“I don't know how that works. And it doesn't matter how much money you have, it's going to be very tricky to do," he ultimately said. His concern, however, went beyond balance sheets and corporate strategy.

“I always worry whenever big companies are consolidating because it means a lot of people are going to lose their jobs,” he added, as reported by Variety, bringing to light that the merger going through will cost more than just catalogs: it will cost livelihoods. 

Clooney's attendance and delivery at the festival this year carry an interesting bit of cinematic symmetry. The actor attended last year’s Venice Film Festival with the film Jay Kelly, playing a veteran A-lister who travels to Italy to accept a lifetime achievement award. This year, the fiction has effectively crossed into reality, with Clooney receiving the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement Award on the festival’s opening day.

The Venice Film Festival press conference saw George Clooney talk about more than just giant conglomerates merging and dispersing. “I support Mark Ruffalo’s ability to speak freely...It’s ridiculous. We’re not going to ban speech.” He stressed that his position on free expression does not depend on agreeing with the person speaking, adding, “I believe in free speech even when I completely disagree with it. That’s important. In fact, it’s part of how democracy works,” regardless of rumors of cancelled contracts with the company.

For Clooney, Venice became more than a celebration of a remarkable career. It also offered a front-row seat to Hollywood’s rapidly changing power structure. As Paramount and Warner Bros. continue navigating the proposed merger, Clooney’s concerns underline the human consequences that can disappear behind billion-dollar headlines.
