Christopher Abbott has revealed an unusual psychic side to his preparation for Professor X. The actor will lead Marvel's new mutant team as Charles Xavier, and his latest interview takes a turn nobody saw coming. A simple question about his approach to the part opened a door that the actor clearly did not plan to open. What followed was stranger than any casting announcement. Even the host needed a moment.

While most actors lean on scripts and screen tests, Abbott went exploring the far edges of the human mind itself.

Christopher Abbott opens up about his psychic prep for playing Professor X

Christopher Abbott has explored consciousness and remote viewing, joking he is nearly psychic. That strange exercise took place before Marvel ever came calling.

"I shouldn't have even brought this up because uh it was it's just going to take to for full context" Abbott said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast as he tried to explain what happened, before admitting that he was failing to properly tell the story.

He then hilariously resorted to a much simpler explanation: "It's all about crystals, Josh. It's all about crystals. You don't even know."

The full story, as told on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, involved a friend and a relative’s house on Long Island, though Abbott admitted that the story was difficult to explain. He was supposed to sense a picture inside the house but missed it. He did, however, sketch a large painting in the same room, and the drawing matched closely enough that his friend had it framed for him. But when the explanation finally became too complicated, Abbott landed on one simple answer: crystals.

While Abbott hunts for psychic powers, Marvel has already assigned the mutant ones, and the lineup is worth a look.

Kevin Feige announced the inaugural mutant team at D23, and Christopher Abbott leads it as Professor X. Inde Navarrette plays Rogue, Adam Driver takes on Mr. Sinister, and Maya Boyd steps in as Storm. Abbott earned the part through a Zoom reading and an in-costume camera test, and he still has not read a script. Abbott called the part a true acting challenge and said he has ideas for the approach.

Sadie Sink plays Jean Grey after first appearing in the role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and Kit Connor takes on Cyclops. Samara Weaving completes the group as Emma Frost. Abbott arrives with intense work in Possessor and Kraven the Hunter, which suits a telepath who thinks for a living. Sink and Connor arrive from Stranger Things and Heartstopper, respectively. Psychic or not, Abbott is doing his Professor X homework.
