Michael Johnston has gone from making audiences question Bear's moral compass to preparing them for another monster-sized adventure. After his breakout lead role in Curry Barker’s micro-budget horror hit Obsession turned a $750,000 production into a global phenomenon, Johnston is riding high. Now, as part of The Mummy: Book of the Dead, the actor is teasing a sequel that sounds like quite the wild ride.

If Obsession made Michael Johnston a master of nightmares, The Mummy: Book of the Dead looks ready to bury him in a whole new kind of chaos.

Michael Johnston is trading cursed wishes for ancient mysteries, and his next adventure comes with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. Speaking to Deadline on the red carpet at the 6th Annual Academy Museum Gala, the Obsession star offered a glimpse into The Mummy: The Book of the Dead, teasing a return to the franchise’s original spirit while keeping the finer details firmly under wraps.

"It's going to be a load of fun. It's a wild ride," he said.

For fans wondering whether Johnston is stepping into the shoes of Alex O'Connell, the grown-up son of Rick and Evelyn, the answer is no. The actor has already confirmed that he is playing an original character created specifically for the sequel. Although the filmmakers are guarding the plot closely, Johnston has hinted at a physically demanding role.

In the talk with Deadline, Johnston also said the aim is to recapture the spirit that made the original films so much fun. With Radio Silence directing and Fraser and Weisz returning, the film is leaning into the franchise's familiar blend of adventure, danger, and supernatural spectacle.

With Brendan Fraser preparing for another round of supernatural mayhem and Michael Johnston teasing The Mummy: Book of the Dead, the actor is trading one kind of nightmare for another, although horror may not be the only genre on his slate.

Brendan Fraser's upcoming projects

Michael Johnston may have made audiences deeply uncomfortable in Obsession, but he is not about to let horror claim exclusive rights to his career. Alongside The Mummy: Book of the Dead, the actor has teased an untitled drama he calls an “incredible queer story.” That is a rather promising change of scenery for someone whose breakout role involved a wish gone horribly wrong.

Brendan Fraser has also shown that his career can move between genres, and his return to The Mummy franchise is only one part of his upcoming screen life. Johnston, meanwhile, has 9-1-1 among his television projects, offering another break from big-screen nightmares. Between ancient tombs, dramatic storytelling, and network television, Johnston seems determined to prove that horror may have opened the door, but it does not get to choose every room he enters.
