Zack Snyder and James Gunn may have become unlikely rivals in the eyes of the internet, but their relationship is far less dramatic behind the scenes. The two filmmakers remain in contact despite Gunn taking over DC’s movie franchise. Their connection is complicated by contrasting creative styles and fan factions that constantly turn their work into a competition.
Snyder has now spoken about his respect for Gunn while choosing to stay away from the new DC movies such as Superman.

Zack Snyder has made his feelings about James Gunn’s DC vision surprisingly clear, even as he remains distant from the new franchise. In a tease released by Happy Sad Confused with Josh Horowitz, the filmmaker explained that he trusts Gunn’s aesthetic and his particular approach to making movies. Their friendship, he suggested, remains completely intact.
"It's a personal thing, you know, for me," Snyder said, explaining why supporting James Gunn does not mean watching Superman. He stressed that he wants success for Gunn and trusts the filmmaker’s distinctive way of looking at stories and making films. Still, Snyder acknowledged that the new DC era carries plenty of baggage for him.

That distance extends beyond Superman, with Snyder telling Josh Horowitz that he has not watched Supergirl or Lanterns either. He admitted that seeing bits and pieces of Superman through memes on his X feed has been unavoidable. For now, however, the former DC director appears content to support Gunn from afar while leaving the new DC movies unwatched.
While Zack Snyder remains interested in making The Dark Knight, his fingerprints are already on Superman, thanks to his costume contributions.
How Zack Snyder had a hand in Superman's costume
James Gunn had a rather unexpected person to consult while figuring out Superman’s costume: Zack Snyder. Gunn asked the former DC director about the iconic red trunks, a detail Snyder had wrestled with extensively while designing the superhero's suit in Man of Steel. Snyder admitted that he had tried countless versions but could never make the trunks work.

Gunn faced a similar problem and initially struggled to make the classic look feel right in live action. Ultimately, David Corenswet helped settle the question, arguing that the trunks broke up the suit and made Superman feel warmer and more approachable. Gunn kept them, giving the costume a distinctly classic touch despite Snyder’s earlier experience.
