Robert Pattinson’s Batman arrived in 2022 as a rain-soaked, bruised and deeply haunted take on Bruce Wayne, with Matt Reeves turning Gotham into a grim detective story. The performance became one of the defining reinventions of the character, placing Pattinson firmly at the centre of a world built around shadows, serial killers and psychological damage. Now, with James Gunn’s DCU moving ahead with David Corenswet’s Superman, the question of whether these two versions of DC could ever collide has become increasingly difficult to ignore.

The idea becomes complicated because Pattinson’s Batman belongs to a grounded Gotham, while James Gunn’s DCU is building a much larger shared universe. That tonal divide makes Pattinson’s latest crossover comments particularly interesting.

Speaking exclusively to LADbible while promoting Primetime, Robert Pattinson was asked about the possibility of his Batman crossing paths with characters from the new DCU. His answer was hardly a hard no, but it made clear why he thinks the idea would be difficult.

“I think it would be kind of tough to have this version of Bruce outside of that world,” he said.

“It’s such a specific kind of [style], the tone of it gets inside you,” he told LADbible.

He recalled how he spent months shooting in darkness. He said the experience affected him afterwards, joking that Bruce Wayne would probably be hiding behind his hands if suddenly dropped into another DC movie. The contrast became even funnier because Pattinson was speaking alongside Skyler Gisondo, who plays Jimmy Olsen in Superman. 

Pattinson joked that his Batman would probably make the other characters more serious, while Gisondo pointed out the bizarre possibility of Batman and Jimmy Olsen ending up together in Primetime territory. Gunn, meanwhile, has previously said that Pattinson’s Batman is not what is currently happening within the DCU, while Reeves’ Batman franchise continues separately.

Gunn’s DCU may be heading toward its own Batman, but Pattinson is not done with the world Reeves created. In fact, the actor is preparing to return to Gotham for a sequel that could make the crossover question even more complicated.

That separation also makes sense when looking at where Robert Pattinson’s Batman is heading next. The Batman Part II is currently scheduled for February 18, 2028, with Pattinson returning alongside Colin Farrell, Jeffrey Wright and Andy Serkis, while Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan have joined the cast in undisclosed roles.

Pattinson has also described the sequel as an ambitious “real left turn” from the first movie, suggesting that Reeves is continuing to evolve this particular Gotham rather than simply folding it into another superhero universe. That approach tracks with the actor’s career outside Batman, where he has repeatedly gravitated toward filmmakers and characters willing to make him strange, abrasive or unpredictable.

For now, Pattinson’s comments leave the door technically open while making the practical difficulties rather clear. With his Batman still rooted in Reeves’ distinctive Gotham and Gunn building a separate DCU, the imagined meeting between Pattinson’s Dark Knight and Corenswet’s Superman remains exactly that: an intriguing possibility for fans to debate.
