It turns out the experience was just as surreal behind the cameras, with one of the star admitting that filming the sequence was “very odd” even for the cast involved.

While audiences were left trying to process Harrenhal’s latest nightmare, the star has now revealed what really happened on set during one of the show’s most talked-about scenes.

Speaking to Variety following House of the Dragon Episode 7, Gayle Rankin admitted filming the unsettling Aemond-Alys-Alicent sequence felt “very intimate and very odd,” though she emphasized the atmosphere on set remained entirely professional. The actress explained that the cast constantly tried to crack jokes to keep things light because scenes like that were not only emotionally uncomfortable but also highly technical to film. Rankin ultimately described it as just another day at the office, albeit while shooting what she openly called a very odd and “fed-up” scene.*

“It was very intimate and very odd but very professional. We tried to like make jokes, just to keep it lighthearted because those scenes are not easy and they’re complicated and very technical. So it was also just like it was another day at the office for being like a very odd, f*****-up scene.” Rankin told Variety.

The bizarre opening sequence eventually gives way to an equally uncomfortable family dinner before Alicent secretly poisons Aemond and slips away from Harrenhal, leaving the wounded prince to seek Alys’ help. Rankin revealed she intentionally viewed that tense dinner as something almost unbearable, believing Alys wanted every uncomfortable second to push Alicent toward leaving.

Looking ahead to the season finale, the actress also suggested Alys remains emotionally invested in Aemond despite his increasingly fragile state, even joking that she has no idea where Vhagar has disappeared to, quipping that the dragon might have wandered off to Crumbl Cookies instead.
