Timothée Chalamet has described growing up alongside Zendaya through the Dune franchise as a particularly special experience, reflecting on how their lives changed together between youth and adulthood. The two actors first worked together on Denis Villeneuve's 2021 adaptation of Frank Herbert's science-fiction novel, with the films becoming an important part of their early adult careers. What began as a collaboration between two young performers gradually turned into a shared journey neither could have quite anticipated.
What began as another major film commitment gradually became a shared journey through adulthood, with both actors finding themselves looking back at just how much had changed.

In a new interview with The New York Times, Timothée Chalamet reflected on the unusual timing of their friendship and how the franchise allowed them to witness each other's personal and professional evolution.
"I was thinking about it with Z, usually you grow up with people over your childhood or your adolescence, and it was special with Z to kind of begin working with each other at the end of youth, and at the beginning of adulthood," he explained.
Rather than simply remembering another successful production, Chalamet acknowledged the significance of having someone familiar alongside him through such a transformative period.

Zendaya shared a similarly affectionate perspective, admitting that looking back at their younger selves almost feels like revisiting childhood.
"If I look back at the version of us then, it is like a child to me now," she said.
She remembered how everyone was anxious, eager to prove themselves and determined to do a good job. Zendaya also credited director Denis Villeneuve's leadership, describing his kindness and generosity as important reasons why the franchise became such a supportive environment for learning and growing.
But growing up together on Arrakis has not exactly meant a comfortable ride. Behind the sweeping cinematography and otherworldly landscapes, the Dune films have demanded plenty from their cast, particularly when it comes to shooting in unforgiving desert conditions.

Of course, growing up together on Arrakis has also meant enduring some rather extraordinary production challenges. The New York Times interview also turned towards the notoriously demanding desert shoots, where the cast had to contend with extreme temperatures, elaborate costumes and physically exhausting sequences. Zendaya recalled how difficult it was to maintain a straight face and deliver the right expressions under the scorching sun.
"There’s scenes where the sun is so bright that I am trying to give another facial expression other than [Zendaya scrunches up her face as if in pain] and I physically can’t," she admitted.

Robert Pattinson, who joins the franchise as Scytale in the third film, offered a rather different account of the production's enormous scale. He recalled shooting a spaceship sequence on a gimbal positioned at the edge of a sand dune, with a 350-foot-long sandworm model adding to the spectacle. Pattinson compared the experience to having their own Dune theme park, praising the sheer ambition of Villeneuve's filmmaking.
As Dune: Part Three brings Denis Villeneuve's cinematic trilogy towards its conclusion, these reflections offer a reminder that the franchise has been about more than intergalactic politics and giant sandworms. For its young cast, it has also been a shared journey through some formative years.
