Ben Affleck has revealed the truth about what really happened when he refused to wear a Yankees cap for the movie Gone Girl. The incident became one of the most talked-about stories from the film’s production. Director David Fincher once recalled that Affleck’s refusal to wear the cap brought production to a halt for a few days and even claimed that it cost $40 million.

However, it turns out that Fincher may have exaggerated certain details, as Affleck has now shed light on what really happened.

Ben Affleck clarifies David Fincher’s joke about infamous Yankees cap story

During his appearance on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Ben Affleck was asked about the Yankees cap incident for Gone Girl. The actor was quick to point out that director David Fincher has a dark sense of humor and had exaggerated the story. However, the truth is that while Affleck and Fincher did have a disagreement over the cap, they were able to resolve the issue quite quickly.

“It was probably all of 20 minutes that we talked about it. And eventually it was like, what about the Mets? And I was like, all right, sure, man,” he said.

The actor has previously discussed the incident, explaining that Fincher initially insisted he wear a Yankees cap for the airport scene. But Fincher eventually decided to switch to a cap representing a different team, as Affleck shared on the podcast. The disagreement stemmed from Affleck’s loyalty to the Boston Red Sox, the Yankees’ longtime rivals. Even though it was for a movie, Affleck was reluctant to wear the cap of the Yankees.

While Affleck is quite serious about his character, this was one thing that he could not agree to, and this is perhaps a good reason for it. Now, the actor also has a unique reason why he would not necessarily mind turning down a major project offer from Christopher Nolan or Martin Scorsese.

Ben Affleck opens up about being comfortable to refuse movies like The Odyssey

In his interview with GQ’s One More Question with Zach Baron, Ben Affleck revealed that Matt Damon had told him that The Odyssey might be his last best chance to be part of something extraordinarily big. When the host asked Affleck whether he felt he, too, had one major opportunity left, the actor shared a surprising response. He explained that he could see himself turning down a film by a renowned filmmaker like Christopher Nolan or Martin Scorsese if the project did not feel right for him.

"There’s a cost to doing that,"  he said.

Affleck went on to explain that while these are exciting career opportunities, becoming too obsessed with career and what comes next can cause someone to miss out on the present. While Damon went on to star in The Odyssey, Affleck chose to focus on Animals, a film he directed and co-wrote. It seems that, much like his loyalty to the Boston Red Sox, Affleck remains dedicated to his career. However, he also wants to maintain a healthy balance between his professional ambitions and personal life.
