Tom Holland spills that Spider-Man: Brand New Day nearly swung off course with an early cut that just did not stick the landing. Movies often go through multiple versions before their final release, and some films are famous for it. Blade Runner, for example, has had several different cuts over the years, from early test versions to the definitive Final Cut. That kind of editing journey is common behind the scenes.

And Tom Holland has now hinted that Brand New Day went through something similar.

While promoting Spider-Man: Brand New Day on Quotable, Tom Holland revealed that the film went through a rough patch in the edit, with an early version that almost everyone involved outright disliked. 

“It totally didn’t work & it was what the people were asking for, but it wasn’t quite what we wanted as the creatives,” Holland said. which underlines how the studio initially leaned too hard into test-screening feedback.

On Quotable, Holland explained that the team had watched multiple cuts of the movie, and one of them had taken so many notes from random viewers that it lost the core vision the filmmakers wanted. 

“A movie can change in a thousand different ways in the edit room,” Holland further added, which shows how much the final product was shaped after the fact to better match the creative team’s intent. That experience also lines up with other reports that the film went through significant changes, including a scene with Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple that was eventually cut despite already being filmed.

That creative course correction seems to have paid off in a big way.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has landed with strong early reviews, with critics praising its more grounded, character-driven approach after the multiverse chaos of No Way Home. The film currently holds around a 90 to 91 % Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with many reviewers highlighting Tom Holland’s performance and the emotional maturity of Peter Parker’s story.

Critics have also responded well to Destin Daniel Cretton’s direction, which keeps the focus on Peter’s personal struggles rather than leaning too hard into giant MCU spectacle. Some outlets have called it one of the better MCU entries in recent years, though a few still note uneven pacing and an overstuffed plot.

That positive reception is now feeding into what could be a historic box office run. The film is projected to open near $800 million worldwide, which would make it the second biggest global debut of all time, just behind Avengers: Endgame. With strong reviews, massive presales, and a huge China opening already underway, Brand New Day is setting up to dominate the summer box office.
