Digger, the upcoming satirical black comedy, has been on many people’s watchlists this October. However, fans are now beginning to suspect that the film is hiding its true genre as part of a bait-and-switch designed to mislead ticket buyers. Last week, Digger released a new trailer that gave way to a wild theory. After reading between the lines, many are now convinced that the film is actually a musical, rather than the gritty political satire it has been presented as.

Now, Guillermo del Toro has stepped in to defend the Tom Cruise starrer. The Frankenstein director has definitively shut down speculation that Digger is a musical.

Fans noticed a few unusual moments in Digger’s new trailer. There was a scene where Tom Cruise looked like he was standing on a rotating podium. In other shots, background actors appeared to be singing. This theory was first hypothesized by John Dies at the End author Jason Pargin on X, but Guillermo del Toro has recently confirmed on the very platform that all these rumors are false. 

“And... it is not a musical,” wrote del Toro, reposting a tweet showcasing Tom Cruise and Alejandro González Iñárritu breaking down the film’s premise.

Pargin's post has been viewed for over four million times, but del Toro’s firm response has effectively quashed the speculation. A sudden, unannounced burst into song inside an apocalyptic oil-tycoon satire could work as an intentional shock for the audience. However, the musical speculation really is just speculation, as sources recently confirmed as well.

Apart from Guillermo del Toro, two sources came forward to debunk these rumors. 

Variety recently reached out to two insiders familiar with the production who have further denied these musical rumors regarding Digger. They reportedly were "amused" by the speculations too. Even though the musical speculations have been effectively put to rest by now, the chatter surrounding Tom Cruise's unreal transformation, which they got done under an hour apparently, is not ready to slow down. 

Apart from Cruise, Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg and Jesse Plemons make the project all the more exciting. And for those who still have their doubts, October 2 might bring all the answers they need.
