BioShock remains one of gaming's most atmospheric nightmares, inviting players into Rapture, an underwater Art Deco paradise where scientific ambition has gone spectacularly off the rails. Between genetic mutations, deranged splicers, and Big Daddies stomping through flooded corridors, this is hardly a destination for a relaxing seaside holiday.

Hollywood has tried to bottle that chaos since Universal acquired the film rights in 2008, with little to show beyond abandoned plans. Netflix revived the dream in 2022, recruiting Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence. Four years later, fans are still staring at the loading screen.

Thankfully, Lawrence has finally supplied a progress report.

Francis Lawrence explains why Rapture remains a filmmaking headache

Speaking to The Direct while promoting The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, Francis Lawrence confirmed that Netflix's BioShock adaptation remains alive.

“We are still working on it. It is a tough nut to crack that world and that story,” he said.

The problem lies at the heart of the game itself. Players inhabit the protagonist's perspective, making every encounter with Rapture feel personal. A movie needs a character audiences can understand without handing them a controller. Lawrence explained that developing that central figure for such a gloriously bizarre setting has proved difficult.

Yet he believes, as per his revelation to The Direct, the team is getting close. Producer Roy Lee previously confirmed that the adaptation draws from the original 2007 game, while earlier plans were scaled back toward a more intimate story. No cast, filming date, or premiere window has been announced.

And BioShock is hardly the only gaming giant attempting a leap from console to cinema.

Battlefield movie could bring Michael B. Jordan into the warzone

Electronic Arts' Battlefield is preparing its own Hollywood offensive, with Mission: Impossible filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie attached to write, direct, and produce a movie adaptation. Michael B. Jordan, fresh from Sinners, is involved as a producer and may star. His acting role remains unconfirmed, so nobody should start assigning him a military rank just yet.

According to reports, Sony Pictures emerged as the frontrunner to acquire the project in early October, following interest from Netflix, Universal, Warner Bros. Discovery, and Amazon MGM Studios. A completed Sony deal has yet to be announced.

The project represents another attempt to transform gaming's multiplayer chaos into a cinematic experience. Imagine the destructive spectacle of Battlefield with the filmmaker responsible for Tom Cruise's gravity-defying missions calling the shots. Insurance companies might need their own support groups.
